SUDDEN CHANGES CAN EASILY BE "STUNNED" AND DISCOURAGED
Two weeks ago, DTH, a first-year student majoring in business administration at Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, confided that he felt frustrated because he went to class but did not understand the lesson. "The teachers did not remind students what to write down or what to study, they assigned the topics to learn on their own. I did not know where to start, and when I asked my classmates, they were no different from me, so I had to ask senior students," DTH said.
Many new students take a while to adapt to the learning method at university.
Nguyen Ngoc Han, a first-year graphic design student at Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, also said that in the first few classes, she was not used to the new way of learning at university, which is that the teacher lectured little, mainly giving assignments for students to actively learn.
Sharing about this issue, Dr. Vu Duy Cuong, Head of the Quality Assurance and Examination Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Law, said that in reality, there are a number of new students who are "shocked" by the new content and learning methods when entering university.
"This sudden change in environment makes many students confused and takes time to adapt, it can be just a few weeks or it can last for several semesters. As a result, in the first one or two semesters, some students will get low scores," Dr. Cuong commented.
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Thuy, Head of Admissions and Communications Department of Banking University of Ho Chi Minh City, explained: "That is due to the difference in the goals of the high school and university programs. For high school, the purpose is to provide basic knowledge, cultural overview, thinking... On the contrary, the university program provides knowledge, skills, attitudes and professional practice capacity associated with future job positions. Besides, the learning environment at high school is very familiar, teachers and classmates study together throughout the school years, while university is based on credits and students must be proactive in their studies to meet the training roadmap".
Successful candidates complete admission procedures. To be able to study well in a university environment, students need to spend time learning carefully about the program and training organization at the university.

PLANNING, PROACTIVE SELF-STUDY AND RESEARCH
To be able to study well in a university environment, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Thuy noted that students need to spend time to thoroughly learn about the program and training organization at the university. In addition, take time to make a study plan for 4 years and each school year.
"Students also need to be bold and proactive in the learning process, sharing with friends and teachers about the issues they are still wondering and questioning. Participate in school activities to have more relationships in both study and life. Finally, be proactive in group activities, presentations, projects...", Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Van Thuy said.
Master Dang Kien Cuong, Head of Student Affairs Department of Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry, also advised students to have a scientific and proactive learning method. First, it is necessary to grasp the course objectives, which are usually introduced by the lecturer on the first day. Then, students must proactively read the documents and lectures at home. When attending class, they must pay attention to the lecturer's lectures and instructions; boldly discuss with the lecturer about the content they do not understand, carefully take notes of the main points and discuss with friends.
"Students should also proactively borrow more materials from teachers and seniors to ensure the correct source. In addition, participate in sports, arts, extracurricular activities, clubs, teams... to gain more skills and opportunities to exchange and learn more from friends," Master Cuong shared.
"Students need to get used to planning and setting goals for each school year, each semester, each subject, each lesson. It may be difficult at first, but with practice, they will get used to it and it will be very useful for them when they study at university. Use support tools such as Google docs, Gemini, AI because they can help them find, organize, store, and process documents effectively, thereby helping them grasp the content of lessons and subjects better," said Dr. Vu Duy Cuong.
According to Dr. Cuong, the current student evaluation of schools will include the evaluation of training points, requiring students to have a plan to arrange and use resources (attitude, time...) to respond well, so they need to participate in clubs and groups to expand relationships, practice soft skills and reduce stress...
