On August 23, the People's Committee of Thai Binh province held a conference to announce the location, boundaries and area of Tien Hai Wetland Nature Reserve.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chairman of Thai Binh Provincial People's Committee Lai Van Hoan said that in 2014, the Provincial People's Committee issued a decision approving the Project and establishing a special-use forest with an area of 12,500 hectares called Tien Hai Wetland Nature Reserve. However, the scope, location, and area are only qualitative and not yet consistent.
Up to now, when all conditions have been met and at the same time, to suit actual conditions, Thai Binh province has determined the location, boundaries, and area of the conservation area and issued a decision to keep the area intact.
Accordingly, the conservation area is located outside the dyke No. 5 and No. 6 of Tien Hai district; to the north, it borders Tra Ly estuary and the planning area of Con Vanh - Con Thu service urban area; to the south, it borders Ba Lat estuary and the planning area of Con Vanh - Con Thu service urban area; to the west, it borders the planning area of high-tech aquaculture, the planning area of Con Vanh - Con Thu service urban area, the sea encroachment area and the planning area of Dong Chau coastal city; to the east, it borders the East Sea.
The boundary of the conservation area is determined by 33 coordinate points with a total area of 12,500 hectares, of which the strictly protected area occupies 2,726 hectares and the ecological restoration area occupies 9,774 hectares. The buffer zone has an area of 3,446.5 hectares determined by 40 coordinate points, with a distance of 1,000m from the conservation area boundary.
Thai Binh province will focus on allocating resources to continue and develop the conservation area. Provincial leaders expressed their hope that central ministries and branches will support them with expertise, resources, project programs, and businesses and people to join hands in conservation.
Reporting at the ceremony, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Van Chien said that the reserve has 590.7 hectares of mangrove forest. The forest in the reserve is contiguous, the trees grow and develop well with a variety of mangrove species (mangrove, acacia, su, mam, duoc...).
“Previous investigations and research results in the Tien Hai coastal wetlands have shown that this area has about 600 animal species living in mangrove ecosystems, tidal flats and coastal estuarine waters. Among them, there are 2 migratory and wintering waterbird species listed as endangered, precious and rare species that are prioritized for protection, coming here to roost and forage, such as spoonbills and spoonbills.
In addition to its natural conservation value, Tien Hai wetlands also have great economic value in coastal areas. This is the habitat and breeding ground for many aquatic and marine species of economic value. Natural coastal aquatic resources have annually brought stable and sustainable income to many coastal residents.
The multi-use value of mangrove forests creates great potential for ecotourism development and carbon storage. It is a place for learning and scientific research, and a place to preserve the genetic resources of animals and plants typical of estuaries and coastal areas,” Mr. Chien shared.
Clarifying information about 90% reduction in Tien Hai Nature Reserve area The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment requested the People's Committee of Thai Binh province to clarify information reported by the press about Tien Hai Nature Reserve.
