Medical news on January 28: Keeping patients and family members warm during Tet

During Tet, when temperatures drop sharply, hospitals have increased measures to ensure warmth for patients and their families being treated and staying at the hospital.

Keep the sick and their families warm during Tet

"During Tet, when the temperature drops sharply and the weather turns cold, units must strengthen measures to ensure warmth for patients and their families who are being treated and staying at the hospital," said Associate Professor, Dr. Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, on keeping patients warm during cold days.

Hospitals have stepped up measures to keep patients and their families warm.

Accordingly, Bach Mai Hospital has equipped an outdoor heating system, warm blankets and boiling water, providing additional cold protection for patients and their families.

Mr. Vu Hoai Nam, in charge of the Administration Department, said that the service for patients and their families had been prepared in advance, with full equipment and supplies. The hospital had also assigned medical staff to be on duty, ready to respond anytime, anywhere.

On the evening of January 26, the 27th day of the Lunar New Year, the temperature dropped sharply, and the heating system along the A9 Emergency Center and Stroke Center was turned on, helping the patients' relatives waiting outside the lobby not be affected by the cold. The system will be maintained throughout the Lunar New Year, until the outside temperature becomes warmer.

Dr. Truong Anh Thu, Head of the Infection Control Department, said that ensuring patients always have enough warm blankets, clean clothes and hot water is the Department's routine work.

However, in the face of the cold weather of the Lunar New Year 2025, all activities have been increased. The Department is ready to respond promptly and fully to any needs of the departments, patients, and their families. The Department's staff is almost 100% on duty, throughout the Tet holiday. Moreover, the Department always has staff on duty 24/7 to provide warm items, as well as tools and fabrics.

In addition to strengthening cold prevention for patients and their families during the cold Tet holiday, Bach Mai Hospital and the Social Work Department also set up a zero-dong booth and Tet meal packages to distribute free necessities and food to people staying at the hospital. This activity was implemented from the 28th to the 5th day of Tet, i.e. from January 27 to February 2.

In recent days, many hospitals in Hanoi have added two-way air conditioning, heaters and warm blankets to serve patients. In addition, hospitals have arranged for more doctors to work in the examination area in the morning to reduce waiting time for patients. At the same time, patients are arranged in rooms with two-way air conditioning in order of priority based on health and illness.

For rooms that do not have two-way air conditioning, the hospital also provides additional blankets and heaters to help keep patients warm. Medical facilities have also provided adequate emergency medicine and prepared equipment to promptly handle common emergency cases during the cold season.

At the Central Geriatric Hospital, the leading specialized hospital for the elderly, since the beginning of the cold season, the hospital has prepared cold-proof equipment and means. The areas for waiting in line for reception, examination, ultrasound, testing... are all airtight.

On the side of the Ministry of Health, this agency recommends that in cold weather, people, especially the elderly and children, should limit going out when the weather is too cold and windy, especially between 9pm and 6am. When going out, it is necessary to equip enough warm clothes, to protect against the wind such as jackets, long pants thick enough to keep warm, scarves, hats, gloves, socks, masks... and always keep the body dry, avoid getting wet, especially the neck, hands, feet every time going out and when sleeping to limit diseases caused by colds.

In addition, you should avoid exposure to cigarette smoke, charcoal smoke, and alcohol, especially for people in mountainous areas, because drinking alcohol will constrict blood vessels, causing high blood pressure, which can lead to stroke and death. You should also avoid drinks containing stimulants such as caffeine. You should not bathe after 10pm, bathe for too long, or bathe in places that are not protected from the wind because you can easily get heat shock, which is life-threatening. Use warm water to bathe and clean your body.

In addition, it is necessary to clean the mouth and throat regularly every day such as brushing teeth regularly before and after waking up, gargling with warm water mixed with diluted salt to help disinfect the throat and limit sore throat. Regularly wash hands with soap to remove bacteria and get vaccinated to prevent flu.

In addition, it is necessary to eat enough nutrients to provide energy for the body to fight the cold. In daily meals, it is necessary to supplement 4 basic groups of substances (starch, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals). For heavy workers, the elderly, and children, it is necessary to provide more starch, protein, fat, and vitamins than in other seasons to increase the body's heat to fight the cold, especially supplementing vitamins A and C to increase resistance.

In addition, you should avoid eating cold foods and foods that have just been taken out of the refrigerator because they can easily make your body cold. People with high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases, musculoskeletal diseases... need to follow the principles of taking medication and a reasonable exercise and nutrition regimen as directed by their doctor.

Regular physical exercise and sports will help warm the body, improve resistance and tolerance to cold weather conditions. At the same time, it is necessary to regularly update weather information through the media.

Many cases of examination and emergency care due to food poisoning and digestive disorders

According to the Ministry of Health's quick report on medical work for the Lunar New Year 2025, as of the morning of January 26, there were still nearly 147,000 patients being treated nationwide. In addition, there were nearly 7,000 cases of examination and emergency care due to suspected traffic-related accidents.

During the first two days of the Tet holiday (January 25 and 26), there were 165 emergency cases due to food poisoning and digestive disorders, however, no deaths were recorded.

To prevent food poisoning during Tet, the Ministry of Health has directed units to strengthen communication work on ensuring food safety for producers, traders and consumers.

At the same time, the Ministry also mobilizes community participation in preventing and combating the production and trade of fake and poor-quality food, as well as food poisoning, and promptly warns about the risk of food insecurity.

In addition, the Ministry of Health has requested relevant agencies to strengthen inter-sectoral inspections of food safety, focusing on controlling production and import hubs, wholesale markets, shopping malls, supermarkets, slaughterhouses and food transportation facilities.

The Ministry also requires strict control over smuggling, trade fraud, counterfeit goods, goods of poor quality, expired goods and goods of unknown origin.

According to the Ministry of Health's report, after 2 days of Tet holiday, there were 42 cases of examination and emergency treatment due to various types of firecrackers and 10 emergency cases of accidents caused by homemade weapons and explosives, but no deaths were recorded.

Regarding the epidemic situation, from January 25 to 26, the country recorded 158 cases of dengue fever, 43 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease and 511 cases of rash fever suspected of measles, including 1 case positive for measles in Hanoi. The Ministry of Health also emphasized that in the first days of the Lunar New Year holiday, there were no outbreaks or clusters of dangerous infectious diseases spreading in the community.

To strengthen medical work during the 2025 Lunar New Year holiday, the Ministry of Health directs agencies and units to assign 24/7 duty for unit leaders, officers and employees, ensuring scientific and effective work; publicly post the daily duty list according to regulations.

The Ministry of Health reminds localities, agencies and units to absolutely not be subjective, negligent or lose vigilance against the epidemic. At the same time, it is necessary to organize forces and means to be on duty, monitor and supervise the epidemic's developments and ensure security, order and fire prevention and fighting safety; promptly and effectively handle and resolve arising situations.

Building a reasonable nutritional regimen for children during Tet

To ensure adequate nutrition for children during Tet, not lacking but not too much, parents need to develop a reasonable nutritional regimen and maintain their children's daily routine so that it is not too disrupted.

Accordingly, for young children, it is necessary to maintain a regular and timely diet so that the digestive system can function stably.

Families should feed their children small portions, not too much at one time, especially foods rich in protein or fat. Prioritize easily digestible foods such as porridge, soup, vegetable soup, steamed chicken, fish; supplement with fruits rich in vitamin C (oranges, grapefruit) or bananas to aid digestion.

Parents should limit their children's intake of unsuitable foods such as fried foods, foods high in fat, which can easily cause bloating and indigestion; sweets, soft drinks with high sugar content increase the risk of digestive disorders and bloating. Fermented foods, pickles (pickles, kimchi) can easily irritate the stomach. In particular, do not give children new foods that they have never tried before, as they can cause allergies or indigestion.

Choose fresh, clean food, limit processed foods or foods that have been stored for a long time. Food must be cooked and reheated before use; absolutely do not let children eat food that has been left overnight to avoid the risk of infection.

Encourage children to drink enough fluids such as water or unsweetened fresh fruit juice to aid digestion; avoid carbonated or sugary soft drinks as they can easily cause bloating.

Instead of giving children lots of sweets, parents can prepare healthy snacks such as yogurt, cheese, nuts like almonds, cashews (unsalted, unsweetened), fresh fruits (apples, pears, watermelon).

After meals, light exercise helps children aid digestion, avoid lying down immediately after eating.

If your child has signs of bloating, indigestion, nausea, diarrhea or abdominal pain, parents should give them warm water to drink. Massage the abdomen clockwise to reduce bloating.

Monitor your child’s condition and take them to the doctor if symptoms persist. Families should also prepare basic medications for their children, such as probiotics, fever reducers, or ORS packets, in case the child has digestive problems.
