To comprehensively evaluate the productivity, quality, and efficiency of the SYN8 three-line hybrid rice seed production model, Syngenta recently organized a workshop in Dien Chau titled "Assessment of the Demonstration Model and Launch Ceremony of SYN8 Three-Line Hybrid Rice Seeds".
The workshop was attended by: Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong - Director of the Department of Crop Production, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ; Ms. Vo Thi Nhung - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development; representatives of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development; and a large number of farmers from key rice-growing districts such as Dien Chau, Quynh Luu, Nam Dan, Thanh Chuong, Anh Son, Con Cuong, Tan Ky, Yen Thanh, Nghi Loc...
Outstanding advantages
In the spring of 2024, with the permission of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghe An province, Syngenta Company collaborated with the Provincial Plant Protection and Crop Production Sub-Department and the Agriculture and Rural Development Departments of the districts to implement a demonstration model of the SYN8 three-line hybrid rice variety. Currently, the model is preparing to enter the harvesting stage.
The rice variety was introduced into production under conditions of low temperatures at the beginning of the season, high pressure from blast disease, hot weather at the end of the season, lodging at the beginning of the season, and especially pressure from the transition between seasons. Under these conditions, SYN8 still developed very well with outstanding advantages: strong seedlings, good cold tolerance ensuring timely planting, strong tillering, vigorous growth and development, concentrated heading, good resistance to blast and bacterial leaf streak diseases, high percentage of filled grains from 84.6-94.5%, 2-9% higher than the control; good lodging resistance, and average growth duration.
Thanks to these characteristics, SYN8 yields high and stable productivity, reaching 7-8 tons/ha on large areas, and potentially 9-10 tons/ha under intensive cultivation conditions; the rice quality is good, the cooked rice is delicious and flavorful, the whole grain recovery rate is high, and the commercial value is high. According to statistics, the yield difference between SYN8 and the control variety is 3-8% in the spring crop and 1-14% in the autumn crop.
In its research and development plan, Syngenta always aims to introduce new crop varieties with higher yields, better quality, and outstanding characteristics compared to existing varieties on the market, including hybrid corn and rice varieties.
The SYN8 three-line hybrid rice variety, researched and developed by Syngenta Corporation, is a rice variety recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development under Decision No. 442/QD-TT-CLT dated November 28, 2023. This is a three-line hybrid rice variety with many superior traits.
Good cold tolerance, high and stable yield.
Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong, Director of the Department of Crop Production, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, stated: Agricultural production in Nghe An in particular, and the North Central region in general, is heavily impacted by adverse weather conditions. Syngenta has been very responsive, researching and developing rice varieties that, in addition to having good quality and yield, are also particularly suitable for the weather conditions and natural disasters in the area.
"In the coming time, the unit needs to continue paying attention to the selection of parent lines to maintain and develop the SYN8 product even better, so that it can accompany farmers in the long term in the production process. At the same time, continue to invest in creating better, more effective products that can adapt to climate change; and work with localities in transferring scientific and technological advancements quickly and sustainably," Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong emphasized.
Over the years, Syngenta has been very systematic in researching, selecting, and developing demonstration models of truly high-quality rice varieties for production, increasing value and income, and building trust among farmers in the area. Furthermore, the company has always been a partner with Nghe An province in the field of social welfare, especially in programs supporting housing construction for the poor and disadvantaged, initiated by the province.
Ms. Vo Thi Nhung, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, shared: Nghe An province has unique and challenging weather conditions, with severe cold spells, frost damage, sunshine and rain, droughts, storms, floods, and frequent natural disasters and epidemics, putting significant pressure on the planting schedule compared to many other provinces.
Therefore, in directing production, we must be extremely cautious in selecting crop and livestock varieties, establishing planting schedules, overcoming difficulties in every way, and organizing production to achieve the highest productivity, quality, and value. Currently, there are 80 rice varieties that can be produced in the spring season, but in reality, Nghe An only focuses on 7 hybrid rice varieties and 5 pure rice varieties.
After two production seasons, initial results show that SYN8 is a suitable rice variety with a wide range of adaptability, well-suited to the soil and climate conditions of Nghe An province, and meeting the requirements for cropping patterns in the spring season. A successful SYN8 rice production model will provide farmers in the area with another option.
