The training course on Improving the capacity of school psychological counseling for homeroom teachers in high schools organized by the Ministry of Education and Training and Room to Read for 3 days in December 2023 has ended. The trainees in this training session were groups of key teachers from 3 provinces of Tuyen Quang, Nghe An, and Ca Mau.

Experts contributing lectures are associate professors and doctors from the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi; Vietnam Youth Academy.

The main knowledge content in the program includes counseling on preventing abuse and gender-based school violence. Guidance for teachers on how to enhance response and resolution of problems arising in relationships with family, teachers, friends and other social relationships; how to respond to the impact of social networks...

The organizers said that homeroom teachers are identified as one of the forces in schools that play an important role in improving the quality and effectiveness of moral education, lifestyle, and life skills for students. Homeroom teachers also actively contribute to preventing psychological problems of students, helping them overcome obstacles and difficulties.

However, according to a survey conducted by Room to Read in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Training before the training, 95.2% of homeroom teachers said they often relied on their own experience, knowledge and personal resources to support students. The survey also showed that 98.8% of homeroom teachers believed that capacity building activities in psychological counseling were necessary so that teachers could support students more effectively and professionally.

Ms. Nguyen Dieu Nuong, Country Director of Room to Read Vietnam, said that after this training course, all homeroom teachers and principals of 6 high schools in 3 provinces: Tuyen Quang, Nghe An, Ca Mau - 3 provinces participating in the pilot, were trained in school psychological counseling.

The instructors are key teachers who have just completed the course. The document on improving the capacity of school psychological counseling for homeroom teachers in secondary schools was compiled, issued and implemented by the Ministry of Education and Training and Room to Read.

In addition, the program also includes monthly professional support activities to help homeroom teachers apply and practice the knowledge and skills they have been trained in to their homeroom work. Based on the evaluation of the pilot results, the training content will be expanded to about 180 schools in the localities.
