Northern border trade continues to maintain growth momentum

According to data compiled by the Lao Cai provincial industry and trade sector, the total value of import and export, purchase and sale, and exchange of goods through border gates in Lao Cai province in the first 6 months of 2024 is estimated at 1.5 billion USD, equal to 164.2% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 35% of the plan. Machinery and equipment, coke, iron and steel, consumer goods, durian, and wood products all increased compared to the same period in 2023.

Mr. Pham Van Phuc, Deputy Head of Lao Cai Border Gate Customs Branch, said that in the first months of 2024, China opened normally, and trade activities were restored better than before.

Goods exported to Lao Cai border gate are growing

At Kim Thanh International Road Border Gate No. II, customs clearance for about 370 vehicles/day is processed on average. Of which, 180 vehicles/day are exported and 190 vehicles/day are imported.

There are currently a total of about 515 enterprises participating in import-export activities through Lao Cai border gate, an increase of 22.6% compared to 2023. The number of declarations made via electronic customs is 36,754; of which 17,028 are export declarations.

The main import and export items are still: peeled wood, dragon fruit, watermelon, durian, jackfruit, banana, rambutan, mango, cassava. The main imports are flowers, ornamental plants, fresh vegetables and fruits, coke, fertilizer, machinery and equipment, confectionery, and electric energy. Basically, import and export activities are cleared quickly, especially agricultural products.

At the International Railway Station Border Gate, customs clearance activities are maintained with 6 departure and arrival trains per day. Goods cleared at the railway border gate are mainly transit sulfur and re-exported iron ore.

State budget revenue through Lao Cai border gate in the first 6 months of 2024 reached 381.4 billion VND, an increase of 66.5% compared to 2023.

In Lang Son, economic activities at border gates also continue to be vibrant. Creating momentum to promote economic growth of the whole province. The total import and export turnover through Lang Son province accumulated to mid-June 2024 reached 25,089 million USD.

Specifically, the total import-export turnover declared at Lang Son province's customs branches in the first 6 months of the year is estimated at 2.7 billion USD, up 20.8% over the same period. Of which, export turnover is estimated at 1.3 billion USD, up 3.3% over the same period; import turnover is estimated at 1.4 billion USD, up 43.1% over the same period.

Import and export activities continue to be maintained stably at Huu Nghi international border gate, Dong Dang international railway station, Chi Ma main border gate, Tan Thanh, Coc Nam, Na Hinh, Na Nua sub-border gates.

Currently entering the peak export period of agricultural products and fruits. The average number of vehicles carrying goods reaches 1,200 vehicles/day (peak nearly 1,400 vehicles/day). Of which, about 350 vehicles are exported (more than 80% are agricultural products and fruits), and about 850 vehicles are imported. The customs clearance capacity at Dong Dang Railway Station border gate is about 35 cars/day (export 15 cars/day, import 20 cars/day).

Lang Son Provincial People's Committee is focusing on accelerating the progress of establishing and completing plans for border economic zones, focusing on completing the draft of the Pilot Project for building smart border gates. At the same time, the Provincial People's Committee is also actively urging the implementation of infrastructure investment projects and non-budget projects in border gate areas.

In Mong Cai, border trade and tourism activities also continued to be vibrant and flourishing. Import-export turnover in the first 6 months of the year in Mong Cai reached more than 1.7 billion USD, up 17.85% over the same period.

Tourists to Mong Cai are estimated to reach over 2 million, up 90% over the same period; state budget revenue from tourism services reached 140 billion VND, up 140% over the same period, exceeding the plan by 40%. In 2024, Mong Cai strives to welcome at least 3.3 million tourists, contributing over 100 billion VND to the state budget from tourism services.

Border trade activities in Mong Cai area are also always given special attention to maintain stability, creating a driving force to attract investment in the import-export sector.

In the first 6 months of 2024, nearly 300 new enterprises were established in Mong Cai, attracting 178 more import-export enterprises, bringing the total number to 878 enterprises carrying out import-export procedures, an increase of 190 enterprises over the same period. The Mong Cai International Border Gate Management Board is also very active in encouraging import-export enterprises headquartered in other provinces to open branches in the city.
