Vietnamese professor elected as member of World Academy of Sciences

In a letter to Professor Nguyen The Hoang informing him of TWAS's decision, Professor, Dr. Quarraisha Abdool Karim, President of TWAS, wrote: "I am pleased to inform you that TWAS members have elected you as an official member of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for the advancement of science in developing countries. This decision will officially take effect from January 1, 2025." The President of TWAS sent Professor Nguyen The Hoang his warmest congratulations and affirmed: "This election is a clear affirmation of your outstanding contributions to the development of science in developing countries. We are honored to have you become our official member." It is known that the Ceremony to introduce new members of TWAS will be held at the next General Assembly, scheduled to take place in 2025. In this election, TWAS elected 74 new academicians, the largest number of elected academicians in the history of TWAS. Of which, Brazil and China are the two countries with the most new academicians (10 people), followed by India (9 people), Malaysia (7 people), South Africa (4 people), Bangladesh, Morocco, Pakistan (3 people each); Vietnam, Cuba, Egypt, the United States (2 people each)... The decision of TWAS takes effect from January 1, 2025, bringing the total number of members of this organization to 1,444 people. Major General, Professor, Doctor of Science, People's Physician Nguyen The Hoang, Deputy Director of the 108 Central Military Hospital, was born in 1965, and is from Ky Anh district, Ha Tinh. He was awarded the title of Associate Professor of Vietnam in 2006; received a Doctor of Science degree in 2008 and an Associate Professor of the University of Munich in 2009. In 2018, he was awarded the title of Professor. He is the main author of more than 100 research works published in domestic and international journals, chaired and participated in many scientific research projects at the State and Ministry levels. His scientific research works focus mainly on the fields of neovascularization and cell culture, free tissue flap transfer for microsurgery, treatment of complex congenital limb defects and organ transplantation. In addition to many prestigious national and international scientific awards such as: Vifotec, Nepomuc von Nussbaum, Karl-Max von Bauerfeind, APKO..., First and Third Class Labor Medals, in 2012, he received the prestigious Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Science Award from the German Academy of Sciences Alexander von Humboldt Foundation for outstanding research works with scientific breakthroughs. The World Academy of Sciences, abbreviated in English as TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences), is an international non-governmental organization under UNESCO, gathering more than 1,400 outstanding scientists from more than 100 countries and representing about 130 Academies of Sciences worldwide, including the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology. TWAS was established in 1983. Before 2004, it was called the Third World Academy of Sciences. TWAS is currently a scientific associate member of the International Council for Science (ISC) and of the former International Council for Science (ICSU). TWAS was officially recognized by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Javier Pérez de Cuéllar, in 1985.
