Lose 35 kg a year with gastric bypass surgery.

VnExpressVnExpress19/06/2023

Hanoi – From weighing 107 kg, 35-year-old Nguyen To Quyen lost 35 kg in a year thanks to gastric bypass surgery and a healthy diet.

Before getting married, Ms. Quyen weighed 48 kg and was 1.65 m tall. In 2019, after giving birth to her second child, her weight skyrocketed to 107 kg.

She tried dozens of weight-loss pills, costing from a few hundred thousand to several million dong per box, without success. After receiving injections at a beauty clinic, she experienced menstrual irregularities, abdominal pain, bleeding, frequent headaches, dizziness, insomnia, and severe fatigue. She lost 10 kg, but her health deteriorated drastically, forcing her to stop the weight-loss treatment.

On June 18th, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Deputy Director of the Institute of Digestive Surgery, Military Central Hospital 108, stated that the patient was admitted with menstrual disorders, deteriorating health, a BMI close to 40, and obesity level 2.

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a body mass index used by health professionals to determine whether a person's body condition is normal, malnourished, overweight, or obese. BMI is calculated by dividing weight by the square of height. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, a BMI above 25 indicates overweight, and above 30 indicates obesity.

According to Dr. Tuan, the cause of Ms. Quyen's obesity is due to the use of unscientific weight loss methods.

The principle of treating obesity is to reduce energy intake (diet, medication, surgery) and increase energy expenditure (exercise, physical activity). However, many people are adopting unscientific weight loss methods in their diets and medications. For example, fasting, only drinking water and eating vegetables, or taking medications and supplements of unknown composition, leading to dizziness, muscle atrophy, vitamin deficiencies, electrolyte imbalances, and impaired function of multiple organs.

Many people who use other weight loss methods such as liposuction or removal of excess abdominal fat, performed at unqualified facilities, experience complications such as infection, blood clots, bleeding, and even death.

The doctor advised the patient to undergo laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. This weight loss method is indicated for obese individuals with related conditions such as diabetes and menstrual disorders, aiming to reduce the amount of energy intake into the body.

Laparoscopic gastric surgery is typically performed on individuals with a BMI over 30 (grade 2 obesity) along with underlying conditions such as high blood pressure, joint pain, infertility, diabetes, and menstrual disorders. After surgery, patients reduce their food intake due to the shrinking size of their stomach. Following this, they need to maintain a healthy diet combined with exercise to maintain an ideal weight and ensure good health.

After more than a year of gastric bypass surgery combined with diet and exercise, Ms. Quyen lost 35 kg, now weighs 67 kg, her menstrual irregularities have disappeared, and her health is stable.

She created a group on social media to share her fitness tips and spread a positive weight-loss spirit. "I feel like I'm living a new life, more loved and happier," she said.
