Journalist Truong Vu Quynh - Head of Documentary Department VTV8:
Broadcasting makes a strong impression

The Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism Award in Quang Nam province is increasingly asserting itself as a major journalism award, attracting a large number of local and regional journalists.

The organizing committee has been very active in expanding thematic awards to many fields such as administrative reform, startups, forest protection, Ngoc Linh ginseng, etc., creating a wide playground for the press.

This year, traditional topics such as revolutionary war, stories related to regional and local economic development, cultural stories, etc., have a large number of works.

Those stories and themes do not stop at the general level but convey more deeply. Many authors have made efforts to find specific stories and characters to express general content. That is a very strong progress in terms of content.

In addition, some works from local press units have made clear progress, surpassing them for many years, with new approaches and ways of doing things.

Some local stations have made an effort to find very personal stories, trying to express and tell them in their own way. Of course, they have to continue to try and improve, but it has clearly marked a step forward in the profession.

If we talk about the truly remarkable impression of this year’s Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism Award, it is the radio. There are many radio works that stand out with very interesting ways of doing things. Many works have searched for stories and chosen simple but profound and affectionate ways of expressing them. Especially, they pay close attention to the sound and music for the program.

Overall, this year, the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism Award has very well met both the requirements of the organizing committee and the expectations of the press community in Quang Nam and the region.

Journalist Nguyen Huu Dong - Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Quang Nam Newspaper:
Character portraiture is a prominent contribution of journalistic writing.

Most of the works participating in the 18th Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism Award met the criteria requirements specified in the rules. The topics focused on issues related to the land and people of Quang Nam in the journey of building and developing the economy - life, culture, revolutionary traditions, society... This year, there were many outstanding works about good people and good deeds, spreading positive energy to the community.

Notably, in 2023 - 2024, the press will pay attention to promoting the Provincial Planning, dynamic project programs according to the regional development planning, the province's thematic resolutions on the development of the Eastern and Western regions, poverty reduction programs, labor and employment settlement, eliminating temporary and dilapidated houses, taking care of social security, etc.

The portraits of the characters of the land and people of Quang Nam are the outstanding contributions of the journalistic reportage in this season. Here, readers can encounter memories of war and human fate that took place in the land that was once fierce, leaving many injuries and consequences in people's lives.

The work “After the Nightmare” (Doan Le) both deeply reflects with a sympathetic view on that, and at the same time connects very well with the issue of people's diplomacy between Vietnam and the US, healing the wounds of war, and building human feelings. Also following the flow of post-war memories is the work “The Victory of Thuong Duc and the Fateful Encounter” (Ngo Van Hung), evoking memorable memories full of humanity.

The topic of the life of the highland people continues to be of interest to many works of memoir, creating a sympathetic voice. It is the story of preserving a unique culture, like a dialogue with the sky, with people and with life, in the work "Talking to the sky" (Yen Chi - Dang Ngoc). Following the stream of cultural preservation, we will meet again an impressive character with a Quang specialty, "The heritage... of the noodle seller" (Xuan Hien).

The portrait of a good person doing good deeds is quite prominent in the work "The listener... a-lic" (Ha Anh Minh), depicting a unique person, who only works as a propeller repairman for ships, but always keeps the limits of making a living, treats people with humanity, and at the same time is full of concerns about the profession and the difficult life when facing difficulties.

The next notable work is “The Scraps of Cloth “Mending” the Crescent Moons” (Jiang Qing), which approaches a model of helping each other overcome adversity in disadvantaged lives.

In the field of good people and good deeds, there are also quite a few works, associated with political significance when mentioning teachers who “Quietly sow letters in the clouds” (Thanh Cong - Alang Nguoc), or “Ca Dong Village follows Uncle Ho’s example” (Phu Thien). In this story line, associated with foreign affairs in the border area, to keep the border peaceful is the work “Like sharing a roof” (Nguyen Thanh).

Climate change and natural disasters have not stopped causing damage to people's lives, to the point of "The porch has waves" (Quoc Tuan). Besides, there are warnings about changes in human behavior towards nature, which also cause the loss of many rural identities, so journalists have focused on aspects of life in remote highland areas, bringing concerns about fate, life, and humanity, such as "Because the rivers have dried up" (Phan Hoang), or "On the other side of the river is A Rooih..." (Trung Viet), "Triem Tay at the crossroads" (Quoc Tuan)...

Journalist Nguyen Duc Nam - Editor-in-Chief of Da Nang Newspaper:
Many works have unique content and expression.

Over the years of organization, with the scale of a provincial press award, I believe that the Huynh Thuc Khang Press Award has a very large reach. In that vein, this year's season has gathered 385 works/292 authors, groups of authors from central and local press agencies. That number has shown the great reach and attraction of the award.

Through the general assessment of the print and electronic newspapers, I see that the works have been invested in carefully, closely following all activities of Quang Nam province in many fields. The works have a unique content and expression. Many electronic newspaper works have approached the digital transformation of journalism. Because of that investment, many good works have been born.

I think that with such a wide spread, it can be said that the works participating in the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism Award are bright spots in the provincial journalism awards, aiming for the national journalism award.
