On the afternoon of August 29 (New York time), the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held an open meeting on the Middle East, focusing on the humanitarian situation in Gaza, at the request of Switzerland and the UK.

Al Mayadeen TV channel reported that representatives of the UN Security Council member countries listened to Acting UN Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Joyce Msuya read a summary report on the humanitarian situation in Gaza after more than 10 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas.

The conflict has caused huge human losses, with more than 1,000 Israelis killed and 108 Israeli hostages still being held. On the Palestinian side, more than 40,000 people have been killed and more than 93,000 injured in Gaza, including many women and children.

Msuya said humanitarian efforts and operations in Gaza faced serious challenges. Evacuation orders issued by Israel have increased in record numbers in recent weeks, causing major impacts on Gazan civilians and aid teams.

More than 88% of Gaza's territory is subject to evacuation, forcing communities to live in precarious situations, not knowing how they will continue to flee.

According to her, the people of Gaza face severe hardship, living in crowded conditions, concentrated in about 11% of the remaining area, lacking clean water and medical care. Gaza civilians face hunger, lack of drinking water, and homelessness at levels beyond their capacity to endure.

The Security Council also heard from Mike Ryan, Executive Director of the World Health Organization's Health Emergencies Program, about the emerging polio outbreak in the Gaza Strip.

Announcing the polio vaccination campaign in the Mediterranean strip, Mr. Tyan said that this would "mark a significant change" for the entire process of providing aid to the Gaza Strip.

Accordingly, Israel and Hamas have agreed to temporarily stop fighting in three phases to facilitate polio vaccination.

Referring to the immediate task, UN Acting Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Msuya emphasized the international community's efforts in successfully implementing the polio vaccination campaign for Gaza children - a disease that the world once thought was under control.

According to her, it is necessary to ensure security and open routes to vaccination sites to prevent epidemic disasters, along with opening the door for humanitarian relief activities.

US Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Robert Wood urged Israel to " avoid issuing evacuation orders" during its polio vaccination campaign, noting that "the success of this effort is critical to saving children's lives."

Meanwhile, China's Permanent Representative to the UN Geng Shuang stressed the need to successfully carry out the polio vaccination campaign in the Gaza Strip, saying the virus "knows no borders".

The French representative also warned that the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip had reached "unacceptable" levels, calling on Israel to establish an "effective de-escalation system" by implementing a humanitarian pause and immediately launching a "non-negotiable" polio vaccination campaign.
