World gold price developments
In the international market, gold prices have experienced two weeks of sharp declines following the re-election victory of US President Donald Trump. However, in the past week, gold prices have had an impressive recovery, increasing sharply in five consecutive trading sessions. The total increase reached 150 USD/ounce, equivalent to an increase of more than 5.7%, considered the strongest increase in the past two years.
From the $2,563/ounce mark at the beginning of the week, the gold price gradually increased to $2,594/ounce, before breaking out above $2,711.51/ounce. At the end of the week, the gold price remained stable above $2,700/ounce. During the same period, the SPDR Gold Trust returned to buying after the previous sell-off, with a total of 8.04 tons of gold added in 4/5 recent sessions, bringing the total holdings to 877.97 tons.
Edward Meir, an analyst at financial firm Marex, said gold prices were being supported by tensions between Russia and Ukraine and the risk of wider conflict. “Gold tends to be attractive during periods of geopolitical tension, economic uncertainty and low interest rates,” he said.
