Steel prices on the exchange
Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for June 2025 delivery rose 13 yuan to 3,505 yuan/t.
Iron ore futures traded in a narrow range on Tuesday, as concerns about steel demand in top consumer China flared as the European Union’s decision to raise tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles countered the prospect of more fiscal stimulus from Beijing.
The most-traded January iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) rose 0.38 percent to 785.5 yuan ($110.18) a tonne.
Benchmark iron ore for December delivery on the Singapore Exchange fell 0.29 percent to $103.55 a tonne.
The EU has decided to raise tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles to 45.3% at the end of its highest-profile trade investigation, raising concerns about upcoming exports that could hit domestic consumption of steel products.
China is considering approving next week the issuance of more than 10 trillion yuan of additional debt over the next few years to revive its fragile economy.
Other steelmaking components on the DCE lost ground, with coking coal and coke down 1.01 and 0.27 percent, respectively.
Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange were mixed. Rebar rose 0.23%, wire rod rose 0.89%, while hot-rolled coil edged down 0.06% and stainless steel edged down 0.22%.
“We expect steel output to slow amid narrowing margins and environmental warnings in some northern regions. But steel fundamentals continue to deteriorate as demand falls due to cold weather, which will put pressure on prices,” analysts at Galaxy Futures said in a note.
Falling steel prices due to weak demand have squeezed profit margins at steelmakers. Baoshan Iron & Steel, China’s largest listed steelmaker, reported a nearly 65% drop in third-quarter net profit.
