Steel prices on the exchange

Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for May 2025 delivery fell 12 yuan to 3,135 yuan/t.

Dalian iron ore futures continued to fall to their lowest in more than two weeks, as weaker Chinese data raised concerns about the economic recovery of the top consumer and a weakening steel industry.

The most-traded January iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) fell 1.55 percent to 700.5 yuan ($98.52) a tonne.

The contract hit an intraday low of 689.5 yuan, its weakest since Aug. 19. However, the benchmark October iron ore price on the Singapore Exchange rose 0.19% to $93.8 a tonne.

Growth in China’s services sector activity slowed in August despite the summer tourism peak, a private sector survey showed. Slower expansion in services activity offset faster growth in manufacturing output, leaving the Caixin/S&P Global Services Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) unchanged from July.

With factory owners cutting prices to stay competitive, consumers tightening their belts and a struggling real estate sector failing to make a significant recovery, the economy faces growing challenges coupled with external geopolitical uncertainties.

China's steel industry is currently facing a number of immediate challenges, including the property market situation, domestic business environment, rising global protectionism and local policies, ANZ analysts said in a note.

Construction steel sales fell on September 3 after a one-day gain, reflecting uncertainty in the domestic steel market, according to Chinese consultancy Mysteel. Iron ore prices could continue to fall in the medium term, with the recovery in prices over the past two weeks somewhat surprising given weak fundamentals, analysts at Westpac said.
