Durian prices drop sharply, productivity low
Recorded in Cai Lay district, about a week ago, the price of Monthong durian grade A at the farm "peaked" at 230,000 VND/kg, while Ri6 durian grade A was priced at about 150,000 VND/kg. However, the price of durian has now dropped sharply.
Specifically, on April 10, the price of Monthong durian type A (2.7 boxes, from 1.9 - 5.2 kg) was purchased by warehouses at 120,000 - 125,000 VND/kg, type B was priced at 100,000 - 105,000 VND/kg (2.5 boxes, from 1.7 - 5.7 kg). For Ri6 durian type A, warehouses purchased the price of 83,000 - 87,000 (2.7 boxes, from 1.9 - 5.2 kg), type B was 70,000 - 72,000 VND/kg (2.5 boxes, 1.7 - 5.7 kg).
Mr. Phan Van Tro (Tan Son hamlet, Ngu Hiep commune, Tien Giang province) is waiting for higher prices to sell durian.
In the durian growing area of Ngu Hiep commune (Cai Lay district), this year, due to unfavorable weather, the durian leaves were burnt, leading to no fruit set, causing crop failure. Mr. Phan Van Tro (Tan Son hamlet, Ngu Hiep commune) has 5 hectares of Ri6 durian.
According to Mr. Tro, due to the weather, this year's durian crop was off-season, and his family harvested only about 7 tons, 4 tons less than last year. When the price of durian was still high, traders came to the garden to buy it at 110,000 VND/kg, and his family harvested 2 tons of fruit. Currently, the garden has nearly 5 tons of fruit left, while the price of durian is falling sharply, so Mr. Tro is waiting for a higher price to cut and sell.
Chairman of Ngu Hiep Commune People's Committee Nguyen Hong Thuong said that the whole commune has more than 1,400 hectares of durian. This is the main crop of the locality, helping farmers stabilize their economy for many years. In the area, there is 1 durian growing cooperative and 18 companies and warehouses purchasing durian for export to China, Taiwan, and Japan.
Comrade Nguyen Hong Thuong added: "A few days ago, traders came to the garden to buy Ri6 durian at 100,000 VND/kg, but now it has decreased to about 65,000 - 70,000 VND/kg. Monthong durian has also decreased sharply, but less than Ri6".
In Tan Phong commune (Cai Lay district), following the general trend, durian prices are also falling sharply. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Phong (Tan Thien hamlet, Tan Phong commune) said that his family's durian garden currently has about 5 tons of fruit ready for harvest. More than a week ago, traders came to the garden to deposit at a price of 115,000 VND/kg.
"However, in the first cut, traders begged to lower the price to 90,000 VND/kg. In the second cut, they begged to lower it to 70,000 VND/kg. They used the excuse that the general market price had dropped so they asked for a small discount. I'm worried that when the durian is delivered, they will lower it even more, even though there was a price contract in place beforehand," Mr. Phong complained.
Durian prices are falling sharply.
What is the cause?
According to Vice Chairman of Tan Phong Commune People's Committee Ho Thi Xuan Dao, Monthong durian is currently purchased by traders at the garden at a price ranging from 120,000 - 130,000 VND/kg, Ri6 durian from 75,000 - 80,000 VND/kg.
"Durian prices have started to decrease for the past 4-5 days. Specifically, durian prices purchased at the garden have decreased by about 50,000 VND/kg. Tan Phong commune has not yet grasped the reason why durian prices have decreased sharply. Currently, farmers in the commune have not harvested much durian," added comrade Ho Thi Xuan Dao.
According to the leader of Cai Lay District People's Committee, durian in the area is currently in the off-season. Monthong durian "peaked" at 230,000 VND/kg, which is the purchase price at the warehouse. Maybe at that time, the warehouses lacked goods to pack in containers, so they bought at such a high price. Currently, although the price of durian in the district has decreased, it is still high, and farmers are making a good profit.
In Cai Be district, durian prices have also been falling sharply in recent days. According to a durian farm in My Duc Dong commune, Ri6 durian currently costs an average of 73,000 - 88,000 VND/kg.
As for Monthong durian, the price has not been updated yet due to lack of stock. According to the leader of Cai Be District People's Committee, the price of durian in the district has decreased by about 40,000 - 50,000 VND/kg compared to about 10 days ago.
According to the owner of a durian orchard in Tam Binh commune, Cai Lay district, recently, due to the effects of drought and salinity, some gardeners lacked fresh water and had to reduce irrigation water for durian trees. In addition, dealing with the off-season is also difficult. Gardeners who can handle the off-season do not achieve quality... This leads to a decrease in durian prices...
According to Mr. Nguyen Doan Nhat Linh, Deputy Director of Phuong Hoang Lam Company, which specializes in purchasing durian in Cai Lay district, at the beginning of the season, the company purchased Ri 6 durian at 90,000 VND/kg, but now the price has dropped to 70,000 VND/kg.
Thai durian is not yet in high supply. "The quality of durian in the recent crop in the West was not good due to the hot weather... so many durian segments were burnt. In addition, the news that 30 shipments of exported durian were contaminated with heavy metals also significantly affected durian prices," Mr. Linh added.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang province, currently, the total durian growing area in the province is 21,790 hectares, of which the basic construction area is 6,875 hectares and 14,915 hectares are bearing fruit, with a yield of 25.93 tons/hectare and an output of 386,724 tons/year.
Currently, the province has 155 licensed durian growing area codes, with an area of over 6,900 hectares. According to Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang Nguyen Van Man, regarding the situation of some companies in the area violating the export of agricultural products, the Department of Agriculture has inspected and recorded the handling.
If violations continue, the Department of Agriculture will revoke the durian export growing area code.
