* African swine fever reappeared in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province in the last months of the year, especially near Tet, causing heavy losses to many farmers, and other farmers are very worried.
Meanwhile, the price of live pigs is falling to less than 50,000 VND/kg, making many farmers even more sad.
The family of Mr. Nguyen Dinh Khoi, residing in Binh Ba commune, Chau Duc district, raises 397 pigs in a closed cold barn farm, does not allow strangers to enter and regularly disinfects the farm. However, his family's pigs are still infected with African swine fever. On December 12, 2023, the farm's pigs were infected with African swine fever in large numbers, and in the first wave, his family had to destroy 155 pigs.
After the outbreak, Mr. Khoi's family implemented many measures to strengthen disease prevention and control to prevent the disease from spreading further to the pig herd.
However, on January 16, the outbreak continued to spread, forcing him to destroy another herd, bringing the total number of pigs that had to be destroyed from both outbreaks to more than 200.
Currently, there are about 180 pigs left on the farm, and his family is "sitting on hot coals" because they are worried that the disease will continue to spread to other pigs in the herd. Meanwhile, according to Mr. Khoi, the price of live pigs is also very low, and many farmers who sell pigs at this time are suffering heavy losses.
“African swine fever has caused my family losses of about 500 million VND so far,” Mr. Khoi sadly shared.
