Pig prices unchanged, China's pork output forecast for 2024

* Pig prices in the Northern region are moving sideways across a wide area.

Specifically, traders in Hung Yen, Hanoi and Tuyen Quang are purchasing live pigs at the highest price in the region of 52,000 VND/kg.

Live pigs in Bac Giang and Yen Bai are being traded at 51,000 VND/kg. The remaining provinces and cities maintain stable live pig prices at 50,000 VND/kg.

Today's live pig price in the North fluctuates between 50,000 - 52,000 VND/kg.

* The pig market in the Central and Central Highlands regions did not record any new price changes compared to yesterday.

In particular, the provinces of Quang Tri, Khanh Hoa, Dak Lak and Binh Thuan are maintaining transactions at 48,000 VND/kg, the lowest in the region.

Pig prices in the remaining provinces are stable at around 49,000 - 50,000 VND/kg, depending on the region.

Currently, the purchase price of live pigs in the Central and Central Highlands regions is around 48,000 - 50,000 VND/kg.

* In the Southern region, pig prices also remained stable following the general trend.

Accordingly, the highest transaction price in the region is 51,000 VND/kg, continuing to be recorded in Ca Mau province.

Traders in the remaining provinces and cities buy live pigs at prices ranging from 49,000 - 50,000 VND/kg.

The price of live pigs in the Southern region today fluctuates between 49,000 - 51,000 VND/kg.

* According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the European Union (EU) pork production in 2024 could reach about 21.2 million tons, down 2% compared to 2023. The EU sow herd has decreased in 2023 and is forecast to continue to decrease by another 1% in 2024, to 10.3 million heads.

USDA also forecasts that China's pork output will decrease by 1% in 2024. In contrast, Brazil's pork output is forecast to increase by 5%; Vietnam's output is also forecast by USDA to increase by 5%, reaching 3.7 million tons in 2024.

Global pork exports are forecast to reach 10.4 million tonnes this year, up 2% from 2023, driven largely by continued growth in Brazilian exports. Global pork imports are forecast to increase 1%, driven largely by increased import demand from Hong Kong (China), China and Japan, which will help offset lower demand from Taiwan (China) and the UK.
