We visited when Mrs. Ho Thi Hai, Xa Ry village, Huong Phung commune (Huong Hoa district, Quang Tri province) was harvesting jackfruit coffee. Her family planted 100 jackfruit coffee trees around the garden, although this crop has not been harvested yet, they have earned over 10 million VND. According to Mrs. Hai, this is the year jackfruit coffee has the highest yield ever. As soon as it is harvested, traders come to the garden to buy it at an unprecedentedly high price.

“There are trees that yield 100kg of fresh coffee, and small trees yield 30-40kg. If we harvest everything, the jackfruit coffee alone will probably yield tens of millions of dong. Never before have coffee yields and prices been as high as this year. Farmers are very excited,” Ms. Hai shared.

According to Mr. Phan Ngoc Long, Chairman of Huong Phung Commune People's Committee, jackfruit coffee is not the main crop of the locality. However, with the fact that the productivity and price of jackfruit coffee have increased in the past 2 years, the area will certainly increase in the coming time.

In Huong Phung, there are currently about 40 hectares of jackfruit coffee planted in home gardens and on fields, mainly as shade trees for Arabica coffee. Jackfruit coffee is in peak harvest season and brings in a large source of income for the people.

In Huong Hoa district, there are many coffee purchasing and processing agents. Some units only purchase high-quality coffee to process specialty coffee. The requirement for high-quality coffee is that it must be 100% ripe, and it is purchased at a price 5-7 thousand VND/kg higher than raw coffee. During the main season, jackfruit coffee is purchased by traders at the garden at a price of 15-17 thousand VND/kg of raw coffee and 20-23 thousand VND/kg for selected ripe coffee.

This year, jackfruit coffee in Huong Hoa district has high yield, quality, and good price, making farmers very excited. Photo: Vo Dung.

“At the beginning of the season, we purchased selected coffee at VND23,000/kg. Now it is VND21,000-22,000/kg. This year, the quality of jackfruit coffee in Huong Hoa district is very good,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang, Director of Khe Sanh Agricultural Cooperative.

Currently, jackfruit coffee trees are mainly grown in the communes of Huc, Tan Long, Tan Lien, Huong Phung, Huong Tan... of Huong Hoa district with a total area of about 700 hectares. In the 2024 crop, the high prices of coffee varieties such as Arabica and jackfruit coffee have caused people to rush to invest in intensive cultivation. This is the reason why coffee productivity has increased dramatically like this year.

“In previous years, the yield of jackfruit coffee was only about 12-13 tons, but this year it has increased to 15-17 tons/ha. Jackfruit coffee is not grown in a concentrated manner but mainly as a shade tree, so there is no capital for intensive investment. Last year, the increase in coffee prices encouraged people to focus on fertilization,” said Mr. Hoang Dinh Binh, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Huong Hoa district.

With an average yield of 16 tons/ha, this year, Huong Hoa farmers have harvested nearly 12,000 tons of fresh coffee. With an average purchase price of 17,000 VND/kg, farmers in this district have a revenue of about 180 billion VND from coffee. The increased supply of coffee has also helped processing units have abundant raw materials and operate continuously in recent times, creating more jobs for local workers.

" Coffee prices have increased, partly due to increased market demand, and partly because farmers have recently focused on investing in improving product quality. That has helped coffee in Huong Hoa district gain a foothold and become popular with consumers," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Hang, Director of Khe Sanh Agricultural Cooperative.
