In trouble because of PRP injection at private clinic
The Department of Orthopedics, Thai Nguyen Central Hospital received and successfully treated two cases of reactions after injecting platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from a private medical facility with the advertisement of helping to "rejuvenate knee joints".
The two patients, Ms. Ngo Thi B., 71 years old, residing in Tuc Duyen ward and Ms. Tran Thi D., 78 years old, residing in Quang Vinh ward, both in Thai Nguyen city, Thai Nguyen province, both received knee treatment at a private clinic on Hoang Ngan street, Thai Nguyen city.

The two patients said that this facility specializes in oriental medicine and physical therapy. The patients' initial purpose was to come to the facility for neck and shoulder massage. Through questioning and research, the facility learned that Ms. B. and Ms. D. had knee pain, so they advised them to inject platelet-rich plasma to "rejuvenate the knee", ensuring that they could be cured within 7 or 8 years.
Ms. B. and Ms. D. decided to have a course of 5 injections of platelet-rich plasma, costing only a few hundred thousand VND/injection. After the third injection into both knee joints, both patients experienced increased pain, their knee joints were swollen, red, and hot, making it difficult to walk.
Reflecting this situation, the clinic only prescribed painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs for the two women to take. When the medicine did not help, the two women decided to go to Thai Nguyen Central Hospital for examination and treatment.
Upon admission to the Department of Musculoskeletal System, Thai Nguyen Central Hospital, 2 patients underwent knee joint aspiration, the amount of fluid was about 10-30ml on each side, the fluid was cloudy yellow.
The results of the joint fluid test showed that the knee joint fluid was acute inflammatory fluid, the number of white blood cells in the joint fluid increased, along with increased inflammatory indicators in the blood such as white blood cell count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and CRP.
The patients were prescribed antibiotics combined with intravenous infusion, pain relief, and anti-inflammation. After about 10 days of active treatment, the inflammation, swelling, and pain in both knee joints and the ability to walk and move of the two patients improved, and the inflammatory indicators in the blood decreased significantly.
From the reality of the two patients, doctors recommend that patients and people with joint pain and unusual symptoms on the body should go to reputable medical facilities for examination and treatment, and should not seek treatment at non-specialized facilities, such as spas and unprestigious spontaneous clinics.
In fact, there are many private facilities that advertise the treatment of knee osteoarthritis by injecting platelet-rich plasma to help relieve pain quickly, and guarantee a 100% cure. However, joint diseases in general are mostly caused by degeneration, and treatment requires perseverance and following the correct regimen.
Increased risk of colorectal cancer due to family factors
Colorectal cancer is one of the five most common cancers in Vietnam. About 3-5% of colorectal cancer cases are hereditary and up to 25-30% are related to family factors, including genetic background and environmental risk factors.

People with a family history of colorectal cancer often develop the disease earlier than the screening age of 45-50. Although the main cause of the disease has not yet been determined, risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing the disease.
The risk of colorectal cancer in families is higher if you have Lynch syndrome. This syndrome is caused by a defect in one of the MLH1 or MSH2 genes.
Multiple polyposis syndrome, another cause of colorectal cancer, is also familial, occurring due to mutations in the APC gene, which is passed down from parent to child. The APC gene inhibits the formation of tumors in the colon. People with a family history of colon polyps are more likely to have polyps that progress to cancer than the general population.
The lifestyle, living environment and living habits of family members are similar, making people susceptible to similar diseases, including rectal cancer.
According to Dr. Vu Truong Khanh, Head of the Department of Gastroenterology, Tam Anh General Hospital, Hanoi, people with family and genetic factors often have an increased risk of developing cancer if they have polyps.
Dr. Khanh cited many studies showing that if a family member has colon cancer, the risk of other family members getting the disease increases 2-4 times. This risk is even higher if more than one family member has the disease or the person with the disease is diagnosed at a young age under 50.
A detailed medical history is important to determine whether a patient is at high risk, including age, family history, personal medical history, and especially the number of polyps they have.
From there, there are effective treatment plans and solutions to manage the disease, avoiding the patient having to have a section of the colon removed, which greatly affects health and quality of life.
Dr. Khanh emphasized that increasing age and family history are the biggest risk factors for colon cancer: family history of rectal cancer in first-degree relatives (parents and siblings), if before age 50, doubles the risk; personal history of colon adenomas, colon cancer or ovarian cancer; genetic conditions, including familial adenomatous polyposis, Lynch syndrome; personal history of chronic ulcerative colitis or Crohn's colitis... Other factors that increase the incidence of the disease include heavy alcohol consumption, obesity, lack of exercise...
To reduce the risk of colorectal cancer, in addition to a scientific lifestyle, regular exercise, and healthy eating habits, colonoscopy is considered the gold standard for detecting and screening for cancer because it allows polyp removal and biopsy of lesions during the procedure.
People with high risk factors need early screening. People who have had polyps or colon tumors removed, or have a family history, need to be examined by a gastroenterologist for regular screening endoscopy. People aged 45-50 and older need colonoscopy. If there are no polyps, they can have a colonoscopy after 5 years.
Saving the life of a patient with CO suffocation
Suffocated by CO gas in a critical coma, a male patient in Bac Giang was successfully saved by Bai Chay Hospital (Quang Ninh) thanks to hyperbaric oxygen treatment.
Recently, Bai Chay Hospital (Quang Ninh) saved the life of a male patient suffering from CO gas suffocation. According to information, the 46-year-old male patient residing in Bac Giang province was admitted to the hospital in a critical coma.
As soon as the patient was admitted, doctors performed emergency treatment using intensive resuscitation methods and hyperbaric oxygen therapy to quickly remove CO from the body.
Doctor Le Thi Mai, Department of Neurology - Physical Therapy - Rehabilitation (Bai Chay Hospital) said that CO is a colorless, odorless gas, so it is very difficult to detect. When inhaled, CO quickly penetrates the blood and causes loss of oxygen in the blood, especially causing very rapid neurotoxicity.
Patients will have symptoms of headache, dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, chest pain... CO poisoning causes brain cell damage leading to fluid leakage, brain edema, patients may lose consciousness, fall into a deep coma, live a vegetative life for life, even die if not given emergency care and timely treatment.
In fact, many cases of CO suffocation, although saved, are left with serious sequelae such as memory loss, decreased concentration, facial paralysis, abnormal movement, difficulty walking, stiff and trembling limbs, hemiplegia...
According to Dr. Mai, hyperbaric oxygen is currently the optimal emergency treatment for cases of CO poisoning.
Patients are given gas exchange and inhale 100% pure oxygen in a high-pressure chamber, which will quickly eliminate CO from the patient's body, especially the brain, helping the patient recover quickly and reduce neurological sequelae such as motor weakness, memory disorders, and confusion.
It is known that recently, Bai Chay Hospital has received emergency treatment and saved the lives of many patients with CO poisoning during work and daily activities with hyperbaric oxygen treatment.
During storm No. 3 in early September, Bai Chay Hospital received 6 patients suffering from CO suffocation due to using a generator in a closed room.
Doctor Mai recommends that people using generators should place them in a room with air circulation to let the exhaust gas escape, not in a closed room, or the generator should be kept separate from the living area.
When detecting a person suffering from CO gas suffocation with signs such as nausea, headache, weakness, difficulty breathing, lethargy, etc., quickly open all doors to let air into the house. Take the victim out of the toxic gas area and transfer to the nearest medical facility for emergency and timely treatment.
