Man with colorectal cancer has a habit of frequently holding in bowel movements

Recently, Taiwanese doctor Chen Rongjian (China) shared the case of a 50-year-old patient with colorectal cancer .

It is known that due to the nature of his work, this man has had irregular eating habits since he was young and often holds back his bowel movements.

When he reached his 30s and 40s, his autonomic nerves became accustomed to this habit and made it very difficult for him to defecate, sometimes even sitting on the toilet for an hour without being able to defecate.

To solve his personal needs, he often used laxatives and enemas, but they only solved his immediate needs. Recently, he felt bloated and something was wrong, so he went to the hospital. After an endoscopy and tests, the doctor concluded that he had stage 3 colorectal cancer .

Dr. Chen cited international research and pointed out that holding in bowel movements for a long time will increase the risk of colorectal cancer. "Retaining stool will cause the large intestine environment to become an unhealthy fermentation environment, which can easily lead to the formation of mucosal lesions." He also reminded that when it is inconvenient to go to the toilet outside, "it is okay to hold in bowel movements occasionally, but it should not become a regular habit."

What happens to your body when you hold in your bowel movements?

Usually the feeling of needing to defecate appears after you eat or drink coffee because coffee has the effect of stimulating the intestines.

Holding in your bowel movements means tightening your sphincter muscles. After 2 hours, you will feel pressure in your abdomen. After 6 hours, your body starts to react to your stools, and this is not good. You may lose the urge to have a bowel movement, not because the stools are gone, but because you are becoming constipated.

After 12 hours, your stomach is stretched by pressure and won't flatten out no matter how hard you try. The longer it stays in your body, the harder the stool becomes, making it harder to pass.

To avoid any unwanted consequences, Dr. Sonpal recommends going to the toilet as soon as the body signals or at the latest 1-2 hours.

Causes constipation

The large intestine has the ability to absorb water from stool. When you hold in your bowel movements, stool stays in the intestine longer and absorbs more water. This causes the stool to dry out and leads to constipation.

Causes hemorrhoids

When stools are hard and difficult to pass, they put pressure on the veins around the rectum and anus. This pressure comes from sitting for too long and straining too hard. The veins that are under pressure for a long time will become inflamed and cause hemorrhoids. Typical symptoms of the disease are anal discomfort, itching, pain, and even anal bleeding.

Causes urinary tract infections

The colon, also known as the large intestine, and the bladder are located close together in the body and have nerve connections. Holding in bowel movements for too long can cause the colon to become full and press on the bladder, leading to the feeling of needing to urinate even though the bladder may not actually be full.

In addition, having too much stool in the large intestine will also increase the risk of urinary tract infections.

Risk of rectal prolapse

Holding back bowel movements for a long time can cause rectal prolapse. According to the principle, when enough stool accumulates in the intestines, it will create a stimulating reaction to the brain, causing the feeling of needing to defecate. However, if you hold back bowel movements for a long time, the rectum will no longer be stimulated as before and will gradually prolapse (this phenomenon is similar to hemorrhoids).

Increased risk of bowel cancer

Stool not being eliminated means that toxins in the body are retained, even absorbed into the body, causing the patient to be tired, weak, and have poor immunity. This is also the main cause of hemorrhoids and intestinal cancer, colorectal cancer in people who try to hold back their bowel movements.

Build scientific bowel habits to prevent disease

- You should eat a lot of fiber such as vegetables, tubers, fruits, fresh fruits, nuts. Eat more laxative foods such as sweet potatoes, bananas, avocados,...

- Increase foods containing B vitamins such as cereals and papaya to stimulate intestinal motility.

- Limit greasy, fried, spicy foods, stimulants such as coffee, tea, beer, and alcohol.

- Drink enough water every day, about 2 - 2.5 liters/day. You should drink warm water after waking up and when hungry.

- Practice light exercise such as walking, jogging, yoga,...

- Get enough sleep every day, about 7-8 hours/day. Get into the habit of not staying up late, going to bed on time and waking up early.

- Get into the habit of defecating at a fixed time of day, do not hold your bowel movements for too long.
