Nearly 9 million US voters cast early ballots, including in battleground states

According to data from the University of Florida, as of October 17, more than 8.8 million people have voted early in the US for the presidential election taking place on November 5. Election data shows that the number of voters choosing to vote early has increased rapidly and for the first time surpassed the number of voters on General Election Day 2020.

Some states in the US allow voters to vote absentee by dropping their ballots off at a designated location or voting in person at an election office before November 5. Other states and the District of Columbia will have polling stations where voters use voting machines to cast their ballots in the weeks leading up to the General Election.

Political science experts say early voting reduces waiting times on Election Day and gives voters more options in casting their ballots.

So far, the race for the White House between Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump has been quite balanced and dramatic. In the latest polls, the incumbent Vice President Harris is still leading her opponent, but the gap is narrowing.

According to the results of a poll released yesterday by the Economist in collaboration with YouGov, Ms. Harris continues to lead by a gap of 4%, with 51% of voters supporting compared to 47% supporting Mr. Trump. Meanwhile, about 2% of registered voters said they were undecided. For the group of independent voters, 46% supported Ms. Harris, 42% supported Mr. Trump, but the number of undecided people was up to 12%.

In polls by Morning Consult, ABC/Ipsos, CNN… Ms. Harris continues to lead by 2-4%. However, Ms. Harris's winning momentum seems to be waning as her support rate is trending downward compared to previous polls.

Meanwhile, former President Trump’s campaign appears to be stabilizing and making notable progress. In a Foxnews poll released on October 16, Trump regained his lead over Harris after losing in the polls in September. Trump is also receiving positive signals as Harris’s approval rating is trending downward and is at its lowest level compared to previous Democratic candidates among groups of voters, such as Latinos, which are considered a strong base for the party.

The election is expected to be decided in about 7 battleground states, or even narrower, only about 2-3 states, possibly Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Political experts in the US also said that this year's election is considered the most competitive when the majority of predictions throughout the campaign remained at 50/50.
