Nearly 17,000 US and Philippine soldiers begin joint exercises

According to Reuters, the annual Balikatan exercise, also known as "shoulder-to-shoulder," took place from April 22 to May 10. Joint exercises were held at a number of locations, with US and Philippine troops simulating the recapture of islands occupied by enemies at the northern tip of Luzon and on the Batanes Islands. Manila stated that the exercise was not aimed against any particular country.
