2024: Vietnamese translation is now possible thanks to Galaxy AI

While all information about Apple's AI has only stopped at introductions and performances on stage, their competitor Samsung has quickly deployed AI for Vietnamese people since the beginning of 2024. What's special is that Vietnamese on Galaxy AI is done by a team of Vietnamese engineers at Samsung Vietnam Research and Development Center (SRV).

The project team consists of 30 direct development engineers and 45 testers, all of whom are Vietnamese. Since October 2023, the AI ​​Language Research Team at SRV has taken on the project of developing Vietnamese for Galaxy AI. They continuously fly back and forth between Vietnam and R&D centers in Korea and India to exchange and build data sets with corresponding texts to train Galaxy AI to speak and understand Vietnamese.

The process of developing Vietnamese for Galaxy AI is not simple. The biggest challenge is that AI training data in Vietnamese is very limited compared to English or other popular languages. In addition, because AI is a new field in Vietnam, the input quality is not high. Issues such as regional dialects, Gen Z slang... are also big challenges. This is a big barrier for any manufacturer wanting to develop Vietnamese for AI.

The R&D team had to sit down and analyze existing data, identifying weaknesses to improve. Thousands of legally collected documents were continuously updated by the Vietnamese team for Galaxy AI, from the first generation on the Galaxy S24 series to the latest version on the Galaxy Z Fold6, Galaxy Z Flip6. At the same time, testing engineers had to go to real-life environments such as cafes, buses, walking streets... to evaluate the real-life performance of AI in many different conditions.

The proud "sweet fruit" of Vietnamese intelligence

The efforts of the Vietnamese R&D team have been duly rewarded when Vietnamese is one of the first 13 languages ​​supported on Galaxy AI from the beginning of 2024. Vietnamese on Galaxy AI is developed based on three main pillars: voice recognition to convert to text, Vietnamese translation to other languages, and text to speech.

For example, with the Dual Screen Translation feature on the Galaxy Z Fold6/Galaxy Z Flip6, users will speak Vietnamese, then Galaxy AI will understand and translate into the language of the listener on the opposite screen and vice versa. This two-way parallel translation process takes place almost instantly and does not create a delay in the conversation.

With the powerful Note Assist feature, Galaxy AI will listen to Vietnamese voices, then automatically convert them into text, summarize the main ideas, and translate the notes into foreign languages ​​if needed. Thanks to that, Vietnamese people participating in meetings can be completely hands-free to focus on the content. At the end of the meeting, the entire content of the exchange is ready for users to review or send.

The email or message composing features using Galaxy AI also demonstrate an extremely rich Vietnamese vocabulary. Gen Z's personal pronouns, slang, or new trendy words also appear very smoothly and in the right context. This is something that not every manufacturer can do in a short time.
