The baby's tear duct was severed by a dog bite.

Phu Tho: A 4-year-old child was bitten in the eye by a pet dog. The circumstances of the bite are unclear. Upon arrival at the hospital, the lacrimal duct was severed and required reconstructive surgery.

On November 5th, representatives from Hung Vuong General Hospital stated that the child was admitted with a torn lower eyelid and in pain, and had already received rabies and tetanus vaccinations from the family. Doctors diagnosed the lower eyelid wound and severed lower lacrimal duct in the right eye as a result of a dog bite.

The surgical team sutured the eyelid wound and reconstructed the severed lacrimal duct in the right eye. Fortunately, the surgery was successful, and the tear duct was stably reconnected. If a severed lacrimal duct is not reconnected, it will cause excessive tearing, affecting daily life and leading to eye infections.

According to doctors, dog attacks on the head, face, and neck of young children are very dangerous and can have serious consequences. When a child is bitten by a dog, parents should thoroughly wash the wound under running water to remove germs. Then, gently bandage it with clean gauze or cloth to stop bleeding and limit bacterial infection. Quickly take the victim to the nearest medical center for prompt assistance and treatment.

Doctors advise families with young children to limit dog ownership. Pets should be vaccinated against rabies, kept on a leash at a safe distance, muzzled, and children should be reminded to avoid contact with or playing with dogs while they are eating or sleeping.
