The investment project to build the Ho Chi Minh road section Chon Thanh - Duc Hoa, passing through Binh Duong, Tay Ninh and Long An provinces with a total length of 72.75km, was approved for investment by the Ministry of Transport in 2007, started and implemented construction from 2009, however, this project was later postponed due to difficulties in capital sources.

By November 2023, the project was restarted after many years of "shelving".

According to the Ho Chi Minh Road Project Management Board, the project is divided into 3 construction packages, of which package XL1, the section through Binh Duong province, is about 31.15km long (from Bau Bang district to Saigon River) and 6 bridges (including the Phuoc Hoa Canal, Cay Truong, Ba Tu, Thi Tinh, Suoi Tre and Thanh An bridges across the Saigon River) worth more than 681 billion VND.

To date, the contractor has basically completed the construction of the road infrastructure and 6 bridges, reaching nearly 70% of the contract value. It is expected to open to technical traffic before April 30 and complete the entire project in August 2025 (4 months shorter than the contract schedule).

However, there are currently some areas in the project that are still stuck with compensation for site clearance, relocation of the power system, fiber optic cables, and rubber gardens of the enterprise.

The Ho Chi Minh Road project, Chon Thanh - Duc Hoa section, is part of the North - South Expressway project in the West. When completed, it will connect the Central Highlands and the Southeast regions.
