In 2023, Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City will be the 4th busiest route in the world with nearly 10.9 million seats available, an increase of 6% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

This information has just been announced by OAG - the world's leading organization specializing in monitoring and statistics on tourism and aviation. OAG compiles statistics on the world's busiest flight routes according to the seat capacity index.

According to OAG statistics this year, Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City is the 4th busiest domestic route in the world with nearly 10.9 million seats available. Compared to last year, Vietnam's route dropped one place, but the seat capacity still increased by 3%. Compared to the pre-pandemic level in 2019, the seat capacity on this route increased by 6%.

Since 2017, Vietnam has continuously been in the top 10 markets with the busiest domestic routes in the world with the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City route. In fact, this has always been considered the golden route of the Vietnamese aviation industry.

Currently, 5 domestic airlines including Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet, Bamboo Airways, Pacific Airlines, Vietravel Airlines all operate this route of more than 1,000 km from 5am to midnight with about 60 round-trip flights per day. Of which, Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet operate the most with over 20 round-trip flights each on weekdays.

According to statistics from the Civil Aviation Authority, in 2023, the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City route will transport more than 9 million passengers, accounting for 22% of domestic passengers. According to the Authority, on average, for every 5 domestic passengers, there is one passenger flying on the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City route or vice versa.

This year, replacing Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City in the third position is Fukuoka - Tokyo Haneda due to the seat supply on domestic flights in Japan increasing by 8%, to more than 11.2 million seats. The second position also belongs to another flight route in Japan, Sapporo New Chitose - Tokyo Haneda with nearly 12 million seats supply.

Despite a 12% decrease in seats compared to 2022 and a 20% decrease compared to pre-pandemic levels, down to about 13.7 million seats, Jeju - Seoul still maintains its position as the world's busiest domestic route. This domestic route in Korea has maintained its top position on OAG's statistics for more than ten consecutive years.

In terms of international routes, Kuala Lumpur - Singapore is the busiest route with nearly 4.9 million seats available, up 50% compared to 2022. The next positions belong to Cairo (Egypt) - Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Hong Kong - Taiwan, Seoul - Osaka, Seoul - Tokyo.
