The product of Nang Ray salt is one of the typical 3-star OCOP products of the mountainous district of Bac Tra My, which has just been recognized.
For a long time, people in the mountainous district of Bac Tra My have had the habit of using the Nàng Rây tree to pound salt as a spice for family dishes. Nàng Rây is a type of tree that grows abundantly in the fields of ethnic minorities in the district.
The plant loves shade, lives under forest canopies and has a characteristic aroma, suitable for dipping grilled meat, river fish or sour fruits.
To create a convenient product that can be preserved for a long time for consumers, Phu Quy Agricultural and Forestry Development - General Trade and Service Cooperative (abbreviated as Phu Quy Cooperative) in Tra Dong commune (Bac Tra My district) has researched and launched the product of sifted salt.
According to Mr. Le Van Ba - a member of Phu Quy Cooperative, the unit has surveyed in Tra Dong commune where more than 5,000 Nang Ray trees are being planted. The Cooperative purchases Nang Ray leaves and wild sim chili to process into Nang Ray salt products.
According to Mr. Ba, the process of making a jar of sieved salt with a strong flavor must follow technical standards. The sieved leaves are picked, washed, and then dried in the wind. The sieved leaves cannot withstand direct sunlight, so all steps must be done in the shade.
The leaves are chopped and mixed with wild sim chili, then ground before being put into a roaster, quantitative extractor and packaged. A 100g jar of sifted salt is sold on the market for 20,000 VND.
Mr. Ba said: “After many failed experiments, the cooperative members have researched the formula for creating granules for the sifted salt product with a very unique flavor. The salt we make is from clean agricultural products of local farmers, without using any preservatives.
Currently, with about 5,000 Nang Ray roots in the community, it is not enough to produce Nang Ray salt products to supply the market, so the cooperative is providing seeds to expand the source of raw materials.
Phu Quy Cooperative has invested in a machinery system with a total cost of more than 120 million VND to produce hygienically sifted salt products, ensuring food safety. Of which, the National Target Program for New Rural Development has supported 19 million VND for the Cooperative to complete the machinery system. Recently, a number of tourism investment units in Da Nang City have ordered sifted salt products to supply to tourists.
In 2024, Bac Tra My district has 7 products of 4 entities participating in the OCOP Program achieving 3-star rating, including: sifted salt products and cinnamon-scented bitter melon tea bags of Phu Quy Cooperative (Tra Dong); Tra My cinnamon-scented orange tea bags and Thien Nien Kien essential oil products of Ban Boa Agricultural and Medicinal Products Production Cooperative (Tra Giap); upland rice pho products and xuyen chi tea bags of Thanh Binh production and service business establishment (Tra My town); Ngoc Linh Vinsam ginseng wine products of Vinsam Quang Nam Investment and Development Company Limited (Tra My town).
