(CLO) On January 1, 2025, the German Foreign Ministry officially launched a new digital portal to support people who want to work, study or reunite with their families in Germany.

In a press release, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called the online system “a real administrative revolution.”

The new portal allows users from all over the world to access and apply for national visas online. The system supports 28 different types of visas, ranging from work, study, to family reunification.

Ms. Baerbock stressed that this reform was long needed, especially in the context of Germany facing a severe labor shortage.

According to Foreign Minister Baerbock, Germany lacks about 400,000 skilled workers each year. Previously, the complicated visa application process with many documents and long waiting times discouraged many people.

“We cannot continue to make it difficult for skilled people who want to contribute to Germany to do so with lengthy paperwork and long waiting times,” said Ms. Baerbock.

The new system, which is being rolled out at all 167 German visa offices around the world, is part of a major effort to modernise the immigration process and make Germany more welcoming to international workers.

As an immigration country, Germany needs a modern, digital and secure visa application process, Minister Baerbock affirmed.

Digitalizing the system not only reduces pressure on administrative agencies but also creates more favorable conditions for migrants, especially in the context of Germany needing to attract talent to solve the labor shortage.
