The brocade weaving profession in A Bung commune, Dakrong district has a long tradition. The colorful brocade fabrics with sophisticated patterns made by the delicate hands of Pa Ko women are the pride of the people in this remote area. However, the promotion and introduction of A Bung brocade products to the wider market, contributing to the preservation and promotion of national cultural identity, and increasing income for women in ethnic minority and mountainous areas has only been focused on in recent years. There is a need for more effective ways to introduce and market brocade products widely in the market.

According to the President of the Women's Union of A Bung Commune, Ho Thi Theu, brocade weaving in A Bung Commune used to be self-sufficient and self-sufficient for family use. Over time, the brocade weaving profession of Pa Ko women in A Bung Commune gradually faded away, with only about 10 households remaining that know how to weave basic brocade.
Since 2007, the Quang Tri Rural Development Program has supported tools, production materials, vocational training, established the A Bung brocade weaving group, and with the dedicated guidance and teaching of Ms. Doan Thi Nga, a person with knowledge of brocade weaving in A Luoi district who came to live in Cu Tai 2 village, A Bung commune, the commune's traditional weaving profession has gradually recovered.
In 2018, A Bung commune invited lecturers to teach weaving to 25 young women members, establishing production groups to develop brocade weaving.
At the same time, the Commune People's Committee directed cadres, civil servants, departments, and organizations of the commune to wear uniforms made from the commune's brocade fabrics every Monday morning and on festivals and Tet to promote the local traditional brocade products. In 2022, the brocade weaving group will be assigned to the Commune Women's Union for management.
By June 2024, the A Bung Brocade Weaving Cooperative was established. With the support of Plan Vietnam in investing in sewing machines, weaving looms and initial materials for the cooperative, vocational training for young female apprentices as well as promoting and marketing products, up to now, the A Bung Brocade Weaving Cooperative not only produces traditional products for the Pa Ko people but has also expanded to produce traditional costumes of the Van Kieu people, creating more jobs for many women.

Artisan Ho Van Hoi, in Hamlet 6, Khe Sanh town, Huong Hoa district, is currently teaching brocade weaving to 16 young women of A Bung commune. He said: “Previously, Pa Ko women of A Bung commune learned brocade weaving using horizontal looms, which was inefficient and could only weave a few simple designs.
On average, each brocade fabric can be completed in 3-5 days by skilled craftsmen, and sold on the market for about 400-600 thousand VND/piece, after deducting expenses, the income is 100-150 thousand VND/day; more complex and sophisticated brocades can be completed in 5-10 days/piece, the selling price depends on the difficulty of the fabric...
Now we train on vertical looms to produce faster, more diverse textile products, with richer motifs and patterns, which can meet the needs of many users. In addition to weaving, training on cutting and sewing products by machine for members of the A Bung Brocade Weaving Cooperative helps women easily serve the different needs of customers. After this 2024 training course, the A Bung Brocade Weaving Cooperative will be able to weave and sew products with sophisticated patterns and motifs such as: vests, ties, ao dai, skirts, handbags, hats, wallets... for all 54 ethnic groups, not just limited to the Pa Ko ethnic group as before. The income of women working in brocade weaving has also improved significantly."

Chairman of A Bung Commune People's Committee Ho Van Hien said that with the support of the Quang Tri Rural Development Program in the past and the support of Plan Vietnam Organization at present, the traditional brocade weaving craft of A Bung Commune is gradually recovering and developing positively. Previously, production only served the Pa Ko people in the commune, now many neighboring communes have come to buy and use brocade weaving products of A Bung Commune, including the Van Kieu ethnic people.
During festivals in Dakrong district, more and more cadres and people in neighboring communes have gradually become accustomed to wearing A Bung commune's brocade weaving costumes. In order to promote the traditional brocade weaving profession of A Bung commune, contributing to preserving and promoting the cultural identity of the nation, we have directed the regular implementation of the cadres and civil servants of the commune wearing their ethnic traditional brocade weaving uniforms every Monday morning; for schools in the area, they wear traditional brocade weaving uniforms every Wednesday.
On holidays and Tet, encourage and motivate officials and people to wear traditional brocade woven uniforms. After 5 years of implementation, the spirit and awareness of using traditional brocade woven costumes has spread among the Pa Ko and Van Kieu people in the western mountainous region of the province.
This is a good sign and pride for A Bung brocade weaving. In the coming time, A Bung commune will continue to direct young people in the A Bung Brocade Weaving Cooperative to promote the commune's brocade weaving products on social networking platforms, e-commerce platforms... to introduce products to consumers.
At the same time, diversifying the designs and products of garments, decorations, and utensils made from brocade products to serve the needs of customers, contributing to bringing A Bung brocade products to the market.
