Watermelon yield is from 2 - 2.6 tons/sao

In the fields of My Tai commune (Phu My district, Binh Dinh), this summer-autumn crop, local farmers planted about 70 hectares of watermelon, most concentrated in the villages of Van Ninh 1, Van Ninh 2, Vinh Nhon, and Van Thai.

Thanks to favorable weather, watermelon yields are high, averaging 2 - 2.6 tons/sao (500m2/sao). In addition, this crop has stable seed and fertilizer prices, so farmers earn a profit of 80 - 90 million VND/ha.

Currently, 45 hectares of "super sweet" watermelon grown in My Quang commune (Phu My district) are also being urgently harvested by farmers to prepare land for the production of Tet pickles.

According to farmer Ngo Thanh Tam in Tan An village (My Quang commune), this summer-autumn melon crop his family planted 8 sao of Apolo 66 variety, this is a short-term watermelon variety, high yield, red flesh, sweet.

Up to now, the farmer's family has harvested nearly 18 tons, selling for over 5,200 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, the profit is nearly 50 million VND.

According to Mr. Ngo Thanh Tam, before that, in the 2024 winter-spring watermelon crop, his family also had a big hit with 1 hectare of super sweet melon variety.

After more than 2 months of planting, thanks to favorable weather and good care, the melon plants grew and developed quickly, had few pests and diseases, produced many fruits, and the weight of the fruits reached 2.5 - 3 kg. Mr. Tam's family's winter-spring melon crop yielded 30 tons/ha, an increase of more than 10 tons compared to the same period last year.

Winter-spring watermelons also cost 5,000 VND/kg, double the price of the same period last year. After deducting expenses, Mr. Tam's family earned a profit of 80 million VND from the winter-spring watermelon crop.

Farmers hit it big with summer-autumn watermelon crop

According to Mr. Tran Dinh Van - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of My Quang commune, in 2024, the area of watermelon in the commune decreased compared to the previous year, the reason is that last winter-spring crop, the price of chili increased dramatically, so this year people "turned their backs" on watermelon to switch to growing chili.

But this year, while chili growers are "crying" because of the disastrously low prices, watermelon growers are winning.

Meanwhile, Mr. Thai Binh Minh - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of My Phong Commune (Phu My District, Binh Dinh Province) said that in 2024, both winter-spring and summer-autumn watermelon crops of the commune will not only have a good harvest but also stable prices, so everyone will have a good profit and strong purchasing power. When the watermelons are harvested, traders come to the fields to buy, making the people very excited.

Farmer Nguyen Van Nhut in Vinh Thinh commune, Vinh Thanh town (Vinh Thanh district, Binh Dinh) has decades of experience growing watermelon in Gia Lai province, and has had four consecutive successful watermelon crops in both Gia Lai and Binh Dinh.

In 2023, after harvesting the summer-autumn melon crop in his hometown in Vinh Thanh district, Mr. Nhut went to Ia Ga commune (Chu Prong district, Gia Lai) to rent 3 hectares of land to grow watermelon. Agricultural land for rent in Ia Ga commune is cheaper than in Binh Dinh. If rented through a "land broker", Mr. Nhut has to pay 14 million VND for 1 hectare of land to grow watermelon in Ia Ga commune, but if rented directly from the landowner, it is only 12 million VND/ha.

In Ia Ga, Mr. Nhut planted the watermelon in the 8th lunar month of 2023. After more than 2 months of care, the watermelon was ready for harvest.

Thanks to favorable weather, this crop yielded 4.8 tons/sao of the Central Highlands (1,000m2/sao). The price of watermelon this crop was 7,000 VND/kg, after deducting all expenses, Mr. Nhut still had a net profit of 10 million VND/sao. With 3 hectares of watermelon (30 sao), Mr. Nhut earned 300 million VND that crop.

Riding on the success, after the watermelon crop in Ia Ga commune, Mr. Nhut moved to Phu Tuc town (Krong Pa district, Gia Lai) to rent land to continue growing watermelon. This crop, Mr. Nhut rented up to 5 hectares.

On the 7th day of the 12th lunar month of 2023, Mr. Nhut started planting watermelons in Phu Tuc, and in early February of the lunar year of 2024, Mr. Nhut harvested this crop. At this time, the price of watermelons was still stable like the previous crop grown in Ia Ga commune (Chu Prong district). With 5 hectares of watermelons, Mr. Nhut continued to pocket a profit of nearly 500 million VND.

After two successful watermelon crops in Gia Lai, Mr. Nhut returned to his hometown in Vinh Thinh commune (Vinh Thanh district) to rent 2 hectares of land to grow winter-spring watermelon in 2024. Agricultural land in Binh Dinh is rented at a higher price than Gia Lai, up to 20 million VND/ha.

The 2024 winter-spring melon crop in Vinh Thanh has a good yield, but not as much as the two melon crops in Gia Lai. The price of melons is only 4,000 VND/kg, so it is not as profitable as the previous two melon crops grown in Gia Lai.

Next, in the summer-autumn crop of 2024, Mr. Nhut will continue to rent 2 hectares of land in Vinh Thinh commune (Vinh Thanh district) to grow watermelon. With the current stable selling price, Mr. Nhut will have another successful watermelon crop.

The leader of Vinh Thanh District People's Committee said that every year, about 70 hectares of watermelon are grown in Vinh Thanh district.

Last winter-spring crop, 28.5 hectares of watermelon in Vinh Thanh brought farmers a lot of joy when the selling price at the field was 4,000 - 4,500 VND/kg, the yield was also quite good, from 28 - 32 tons/ha. This summer-autumn crop, watermelon growers continued to make a profit.
