Pass the pilot level
With 7 units being awarded the Quang Nam green tourism certificate by the end of 2024, the total number of destinations and businesses awarded this certificate in the province has increased to 32 since the first award in 2022.
After 3 years of operation, assessment and evaluation, it can be seen that this is still a very modest number compared to the number of more than 1,000 businesses and destinations in Quang Nam.
Notably, to date, no community-based tourism destination in the province has been awarded green certification in this field. The units and businesses awarded certification are mainly concentrated in Hoi An, while only a few high-end resorts in Dien Ban, Thang Binh, etc. have achieved certification.
The main reason is that tourism units outside Hoi An City do not have a regular source of visitors, do not have the motivation and lack the resources to move towards transformation. According to the plan for developing Quang Nam tourism products until 2030, strive to "build a policy mechanism for developing green and sustainable tourism" with the implementation time in 2025.
Mr. Phan Xuan Thanh - Chairman of Quang Nam Tourism Association said: "The initial launch of Quang Nam green certification has created a buzz but is still at the pilot level. Therefore, the province needs to re-evaluate this green certification and the Provincial People's Council should study and have a project to create resources to spread it, but currently without policies and resources, it is very difficult for the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to implement it."
Mr. Nguyen Son Thuy - Director of Duy Nhat Dong Duong Tourism Company Limited commented that Quang Nam tourism has built a number of distinct green product lines that can be sold at high prices, and has been recognized with a number of prestigious international awards, something that very few other localities have. The green tourism orientation that the province is pursuing is very sustainable, and has initially had a solid foundation to create a distinct competitive advantage.
Creating a market for green products
Mr. Phan Xuan Thanh said that Quang Nam tourism industry has developed for a long time and established a foundation at a certain level, so it needs to have a specific development orientation in depth, not just a general orientation.
Green tourism requires the synchronous participation of all sectors. If other sectors are not green, tourism cannot be green. Tourism only relies on the values of other sectors such as agriculture, culture, etc. to develop.
“In fact, it is normal for some businesses to be “impatient” because the transition to a green trend has not brought immediate benefits because “money goes hand in hand”. What is needed now is appropriate investment in the values that Quang Nam tourism has built.
We must find ways to sell this product widely internationally by building a market for green tourism. We need to pioneer the organization of a regular green tourism fair in Quang Nam, thereby associating the brand of this fair with Quang Nam. In order for domestic and foreign travel businesses to find green tourism products, they must converge in Quang Nam" - Mr. Nguyen Son Thuy proposed.
Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Phan Thai Binh said that the Provincial People's Committee has recently issued a set of green tourism criteria for a number of types of tourism activities in the province.
In addition to updating and amending some criteria to be closer to the practical operation of local tourism, this set of criteria also includes a set of green tourism criteria for food service establishments, which is a wide-ranging field, very important in the green development orientation of Quang Nam tourism.
“The recent achievements show that tourism is on the right track to become a key economic sector of Quang Nam. The authorities need to quickly synthesize the opinions of businesses and advise on specific policies so that the province can issue projects and policies to accompany and support tourism businesses and the local tourism industry,” said Mr. Phan Thai Binh.
