As the largest port city in the North, Hai Phong has its own unique cultural and historical values. This is one of the important resources for the city to develop its tourism economy. Currently, Hai Phong is making efforts to exploit and develop these cultural and historical values into its own unique and characteristic tourism products.

Diverse potential
Professor, Dr. Truong Quoc Binh, former Deputy Director of the Department of Cultural Heritage, said that Hai Phong has a long-standing historical and cultural tradition and a rich treasure trove of historical and cultural relics. Archaeological results and research on old documents show that this is the land where ancient Vietnamese people lived from ancient times.
Besides, in the history of the country's resistance against foreign invaders, Hai Phong is a locality that recorded many glorious victories of Vietnamese feudal dynasties such as the victories on Bach Dang River of King Ngo Quyen in 938, King Le Dai Hanh in 981 and Hung Dao Dai Vuong Tran Quoc Tuan in 1288.
In modern times, according to Professor, Doctor Truong Quoc Binh, Hai Phong was the largest port in the North, an important traffic hub on the international maritime route; an industrial center, with the first cement factory in Indochina.
Therefore, the city has become one of the cradles marking the birth of the working class and the Vietnamese workers' movement fighting against the oppression and exploitation of French colonialism. That long and glorious history has left valuable cultural heritages, which are tourism resources contributing to the brand of the heroic Port City.
Meanwhile, Dr. Duong Duc Hung, Deputy Director of Hai Phong Department of Tourism, noted that Hai Phong has many core cultural values associated with cultural heritages. Notable among these is Hai Phong Port. This seaport was formed on the basis of Ninh Hai wharf of Cua Cam fishing village from the 18th century. In 1874, the Nguyen Dynasty handed over Hai Phong land to the French colonialists. After that, the French built Hai Phong Port into a bustling port. The development of Hai Phong Port is closely linked to the urban development of the city, forming the only "Port Land" brand in Vietnam.
On the other hand, Hai Phong also has beautiful natural landscapes and many valuable heritages such as Lan Ha Bay in Cat Ba archipelago - one of the most beautiful bays in the world, the temple of Trang Trinh Nguyen Binh Khiem or the Mac Dynasty Relic Site. Notably, in September 2023, Ha Long Bay (Quang Ninh) - Cat Ba Archipelago (Hai Phong) was recognized as a World Natural Heritage by the World Heritage Committee.

Dr. Duong Duc Hung, Deputy Director of Hai Phong Department of Tourism, shared that the Department is currently developing tourism products to experience with fishermen in Lan Ha Bay, and at the same time building tourism products to the mangrove forest - the largest mangrove forest in the North - in Do Son combined with the experience of being a fisherman to create a highlight to attract tourists. Along with that, Hai Phong Tourism is continuing to develop night services on walking streets combined with exploiting the cultural advantages of the locality, meeting the tastes of tourists.
In an effort to exploit the cultural and historical values of the city, Hai Phong tourism industry is currently researching and developing two new products: tourism associated with the history of Hai Phong City Party Committee, and cultural and historical tours associated with environmental protection and career guidance for students.
At the end of October 2023, the Department of Tourism, the Department of Education and Training coordinated with the Hai Phong City Youth Union to organize a program to introduce cultural, historical and experiential tourism products associated with environmental protection and career guidance for students. The program introduced 9 tourist attractions associated with cultural and historical education including: Hai Phong Museum, Navy Museum, Military Zone 3 Museum, Bach Dang Giang Relic Site, Cao Quy Stake Yard, K15 Wharf, Nghieng Wharf, Nguyen Binh Khiem Relic Site, Mac Dynasty Memorial Site and other related content.
In the coming time, to continue developing cultural tourism, Dr. Pham Tu, former Deputy General Director of Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, proposed that the cultural and tourism sectors of Hai Phong should focus more on promoting the value of the Relic Site and Temple of Trinh Nguyen Binh Khiem. This is an attractive and unique destination in Vietnam.
On the other hand, according to experts, Hai Phong cuisine has its own unique characteristics and can be developed into tourism products to attract domestic and foreign tourists to visit and enjoy./.
In the Hai Phong City Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, Hai Phong is identified as a "major seaport city in the region and the world" and an "international sea tourism center. The planning also aims to build Do Son tourism-service area into a "tourism center combined with seminars, conferences, events; sports, entertainment, beliefs and sea festivals"; Cat Ba, Long Chau, Bach Long Vi into "tourism-service areas combined with protection and preservation of the ecological environment"; the old town and Thuy Nguyen into "tourism-commercial areas based on historical and architectural values, promoting tourism space associated with the historical victory relic system of Bach Dang Giang". In addition, Hai Phong plans to form cultural heritage tourism routes such as Cai Beo - Bach Dang Giang - Voi Mountain - Nguyen Binh Khiem Temple Relic Site - Mac Dynasty Memorial Site.../.
