Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education proposed to organize the 10th grade exam on June 6-7, with additional recruitment based on the results and admission status of candidates.
The content was mentioned in the report of the Department of Education and Training sent to the City People's Committee on primary school enrollment, on the morning of March 16.
Accordingly, the exam is organized with three compulsory subjects. Math and Literature have a test time of 120 minutes, Foreign Language 90 minutes. Candidates taking the exam for specialized or integrated grade 10 will take an additional specialized or integrated subject test in 150 minutes.
The Department of Education and Training said the exam structure is similar to every year, emphasizing the candidates' ability to solve practical problems. The Literature exam has adjustments in the literary argumentation section.
In addition, the Department proposed two phases in 10th grade admission. In phase 1, students register 3 wishes to take the entrance exam to public high schools (except Le Hong Phong, Tran Dai Nghia and Gifted High Schools).
In phase 2, depending on the admission situation, the Department will decide to recruit additional students. This is to ensure the rights of candidates with high scores but not admitted, while some schools do not have enough students to enroll.
The admission score is the sum of the three exam scores and the priority score (if any). The principle is that the standard score for the second choice is not lower than the first choice, and the third choice is not lower than the second choice. In some cases, the standard score between the three choices can be equal, depending on the number of candidates registering for each choice.
The Department notes that students are not allowed to change their preferences after the allowed time and after the results are available. Therefore, students need to choose a suitable school, close to their place of residence, to avoid the case of being admitted but not enrolling because it is far from home.
For Thanh An island commune, Can Gio district, the Department proposed to only consider admission to grade 10 instead of taking an entrance exam like every year.

In 2023, nearly 96,000 candidates took the 10th grade public entrance exam in Ho Chi Minh City, about 77,300 of whom passed (80%). However, nearly 5,000 students did not enroll. The main reason is believed to be that many candidates live in the city center but enroll in schools in the suburbs, so they cannot attend school because they are far from home.
Ho Chi Minh City then recruited more but still had nearly 2,000 vacant positions. Therefore, Ho Chi Minh City plans to change the recruitment process to overcome this limitation.
