Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education has proposed holding the 10th grade entrance exam on June 6-7, with an additional round of admissions based on the results and enrollment status of candidates.

This information was included in the report submitted by the Department of Education and Training to the City People's Committee regarding enrollment at the beginning of the school year, on the morning of March 16th.

Accordingly, the exam consists of three compulsory subjects. Mathematics and Literature have a time limit of 120 minutes, while Foreign Language has a time limit of 90 minutes. Candidates applying to specialized or integrated 10th-grade classes will take an additional specialized or integrated subject exam lasting 150 minutes.

The Department of Education and Training stated that the exam structure is similar to previous years, emphasizing candidates' ability to solve real-world problems. However, the Literature exam has been adjusted in the literary analysis section.

In addition, the Department proposed two stages in the 10th grade admissions process. Stage 1: Students register three preferences to take the entrance exam for public high schools (excluding Le Hong Phong Specialized High School, Tran Dai Nghia High School, and the Gifted High School).

In Phase 2, depending on the enrollment situation, the Department will decide on supplementary admissions. This aims to ensure the rights of high-scoring candidates who were not admitted, while some schools may not have filled their quotas.

The admission score is the sum of the scores from the three exams and any priority points (if applicable). The principle is that the cutoff score for the second choice cannot be lower than the first choice, and the cutoff score for the third choice cannot be lower than the cutoff score for the second choice. In some cases, the cutoff scores for all three choices may be equal, depending on the number of applicants for each choice.

The Department reminds students that they are not allowed to change their preferences after the permitted time and after the results are announced. Therefore, they need to choose a suitable school that is close to their place of residence, avoiding the situation where they are accepted but cannot enroll because it is far from home.

For Thạnh An island commune in Cần Giờ district, the Department proposes that students be admitted to grade 10 based on selection criteria instead of taking an entrance exam as in previous years.

In 2023, nearly 96,000 candidates took the entrance exam for 10th grade in public schools in Ho Chi Minh City, with approximately 77,300 passing (80%). However, nearly 5,000 students did not enroll. The main reason is believed to be that many candidates living in the city center registered for schools in suburban areas, making it impossible for them to attend due to the distance from home.

Ho Chi Minh City subsequently conducted additional recruitment but still had nearly 2,000 vacancies. Therefore, Ho Chi Minh City plans to change the recruitment process to overcome this limitation.
