Speaking at the opening of the event, Ms. Tran Thi Thuy Lan - Deputy Head of the Management Board of Hoan Kiem Lake and Hanoi Old Quarter said that the event was held to celebrate the 49th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2024) and the 137th anniversary of International Labor Day (May 1, 1886 - May 1, 2024), with the aim of preserving and promoting the values of traditional crafts and promoting the beauty of local culture.

The brocade weaving craft village of Xi Thoai hamlet, Xuan Lanh commune, Dong Xuan district was formed in 1945. It gradually became popular and expanded to villages in Xuan Lanh commune and Son Hoa and Song Hinh districts.

Ms. Tran Thi Thuy Lan - Deputy Head of the Management Board of Hoan Kiem Lake and Hanoi Old Quarter delivered the opening speech at the event.

"Through the event, we hope to have the opportunity to exchange traditional craft culture. This year, we chose Xi Thoai brocade - this is also one of the very developed crafts in the Northwest of Vietnam. However, for the first time in coordination with the Central region, the Management Board of Hoan Kiem Lake and Hanoi Old Quarter hopes that the units will exchange and introduce the craft, the characteristics and beauty of regional culture to people across the country," Ms. Tran Thi Thuy Lan emphasized.

Brocade is a type of fabric woven by hand from fibers derived from flax, cotton and hemp. The surface of the brocade fabric is woven in great detail, with raised patterns that look like hand embroidery, but in fact the entire process to create the brocade fabric is done on a loom. Brocade fabric is handmade by the people of Xuan Lanh commune.

Each pattern woven onto the fabric represents the unique identity of the ethnic groups here. Weaving brocade is often much more difficult because you have to remember each thread and pattern to replace the colored threads correctly. If you make a mistake or forget something during the weaving process, you have to take it apart and fix it right away.

With a simple way of thinking, the motifs in the brocade products of the Bana people are symmetrical shapes with high symbolic value. Symmetrical motifs reflect the concept of the universe, heaven - earth, yin - yang with nature as a model. Each brocade is made as a miniature picture of nature from stylized geometric lines. The patterns on the fabric surface represent the daily life of the people here. In addition, the patterns also symbolize nature, mountains and forests, flowers and leaves.

The main colors are white, red and black. Red symbolizes strength and love. White symbolizes desire and dreams. Black symbolizes power and the strength of the mountains and forests and of nature. Among the colors, the Ba Na people value black the most and worship it as a supernatural power.
