Allies want Republicans to consider Trump as 'presumptive nominee'

VnExpressVnExpress26/01/2024

Trump allies have introduced a draft resolution asking Republicans to consider the former president a "presumptive nominee" and move to a general election.

"Resolution: The Republican National Committee (RNC) declares Donald Trump the presumptive presidential nominee in the 2024 election and moves to general election mode from this point on, welcoming supporters of the candidates to join Team Trump 2024," The Dispatch quoted a draft resolution submitted by David Bossie, a Maryland representative at the RNC, on January 25.

Bossie’s draft outlines a number of issues the RNC needs to address regarding the Republican presidential race, citing Trump’s recent victories in Iowa and New Hampshire. “All indications are mathematically that any other candidate will win the Republican nomination from our presumptive nominee, Mr. Trump,” the draft reads.

RNC spokesman Keith Schipper confirmed that the RNC Resolutions Committee will review Bossie’s proposal and will decide whether to bring it up for a vote at the RNC’s annual meeting, which is attended by 168 members, next week.

Mr Bossie, an ally of Mr Trump, has not commented on the information.

"While I appreciate the RNC wanting to make me the presumptive nominee, and have the votes to do so, I feel they should not do so, for the sake of party unity," Trump wrote on the Truth Social social network late on January 25. "I should do it the old-fashioned way and complete the process at the ballot box."

Meanwhile, the campaign of former US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, Mr Trump's main opponent, said the Republican candidate should be decided by voters.

"Who cares what the RNC says? We will let millions of Republican voters across America decide who will run for president, not an inner circle in Washington," Haley's campaign said in a statement.

After two victories in Iowa and New Hampshire, Mr. Trump has 32 delegates and needs to reach the 1,215 delegate mark to become the Republican nominee when the party holds its national convention in July. Ms. Haley currently has 17 delegates.
