Thief pretending to be a mannequin (right) in a shopping mall
The Guardian newspaper reported on October 20 that authorities in the Polish capital Warsaw have just prosecuted a young man for theft, after he pretended to be a mannequin standing in a jewelry store in a shopping mall, waiting for the right moment to strike.
Police said the 22-year-old suspect managed to elude employees and shoppers by standing still with a handbag in his hand, mingling with several other mannequins in the store window. The suspect’s identity has not been released.
"With the bag in his hand, he stood still in front of the shop window and pretended to be a display mannequin. When he felt safe, he started stealing jewelry," according to police in the Srodmiescie district in central Warsaw.
After many attempts, "luck ran out" for the thief
Initial investigation revealed that after the mall closed, the thief took away some jewelry from several locations. The suspect is also accused of participating in several previous robberies at the mall.
Once, this person went to a bar at a shopping mall after closing hours and ate and drank to his heart's content, before going to a clothing store to change into a new outfit.
In one security camera footage, the man was seen squeezing through a narrow gap under a store’s rolling shutter. Another time, he waited until closing time and stole money from several cash registers.
Finally, his "luck ran out" when the young man was discovered by security guards and detained before being handed over to the police. The suspect has been detained for 3 months and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
