Pokrivac, who played for Dinamo Zagreb, Monaco and Salzburg, passed away at the age of 39, leaving many regrets in the football world.
Pokrivac, who plays for fifth-tier side NK Vojnic, was involved in an accident while travelling with several teammates in the Karlova C region of central Croatia on April 18, the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) said in a statement. The accident involved four vehicles, and in addition to Pokrivac, one other person was also killed. The other two people in Pokrivac's car are in critical condition.
Pokrivac was a key player for Croatia between 2008 and 2010, making 15 appearances for the national team. He was a teammate of Luka Modric at Dinamo Zagreb as a youth teammate, and the pair also played together for Croatia at Euro 2008, where Pokrivac played the full 90 minutes against Poland.
The player born in 1985 faced a big shock in 2015 when he was diagnosed with a rare cancer, forcing him to retire from his top-flight career. However, his love for football still made Pokrivac continue to play in lower-league tournaments in Croatia until the end of his life.
The accident was a huge shock not only for Pokrivac's family and fans, but also for Croatian football. This talented player will forever be remembered as part of the golden generation of Croatian football.
