Despite being the host nation of EURO 2024 and familiar with the weather and climate conditions of their home country, the members of the German national team still faced difficulties with insects.
The team's headquarters in Bavaria is being attacked by several insects, including mosquitoes and bees. Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has had to use nets and mosquito nets to avoid being bitten.
The 38-year-old Bayern Munich star said: “We need to make sure that the mosquito nets are always pulled shut when we watch the matches on TV by the pool.”
Coach Julian Nagelsmann said: "There's an unusually high number of mosquitoes here. We need to pay attention to the wind so that not too many mosquitoes get in. Otherwise, we'll have to go inside the office."
Striker Maximilian Beier, 21, added: “I’ve been bitten a few times. But if mosquitoes are the biggest problem we face, then it’s okay.”
The combination of flooding in southern Germany and unseasonal heat has fueled an increase in insects.
Expert Martin Geier stated: "They are very aggressive, appear in large numbers, and burn both during the day and at night."
This isn't the first time the German team has been targeted by insects during EURO 2024. A swarm of bees invaded the Stuttgart Arena stadium the night before their clash with Hungary last week.
Firefighters wearing specialized protective gear had to remove these creatures after they built nests on a billboard in the yard.
