There are 13 players summoned this time, notably the return of Nguyen Hoang Yen (female) and Nguyen Minh Nhat Quang (male), both from Ho Chi Minh City. These are two players with recognized talent but were not called up to the Vietnamese chess team to participate in the 32nd SEA Games, causing outrage among experts and Vietnamese chess fans. As a result, Mr. To Quoc Khanh, in charge of the chess department of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, was removed from the team leader role at the last minute.
Nguyen Hoang Yen was also called back to the Vietnamese chess team to prepare for the 19th ASIAD.
The remaining players called up to the Chinese chess team this time are Lai Ly Huynh (Binh Duong), Nguyen Thanh Bao, Chu Tuan Hai, Ha Van Tien, Dang Cuu Tung Lan (Binh Phuoc), Nguyen Quang Nhat (Quang Ninh), Ngo Tri Thien (HCMC) on the men's team and Le Thi Kim Loan, Nguyen Thi Phi Liem (Hanoi), Dam Thi Thuy Dung (HCMC) on the women's team.
Speaking to Thanh Nien after receiving the decision to gather this time, head coach Hoang Dinh Hong said that from now until the end of 2023, the Vietnamese chess team will have 3 major international tournaments: the Asian team tournament in August in Thailand, the ASIAD tournament in September in China and the world championship in November in the US. "I agreed to return to the team after 4 years with the hope of supporting the coaches and athletes to stabilize their spirit and expertise to focus on the upcoming international tournaments, focusing on the 19th ASIAD. ASIAD is a tournament completely different from the SEA Games when the competition is fiercer. I hope that the bigger the challenges, the more united we will be to overcome them in order to leave some mark," said coach Hoang Dinh Hong.
