Unique 300-year-old persimmon tree in Bac Giang

Despite enduring centuries of bombing and shelling during wartime, the persimmon tree in Huong residential area, Tho Xuong ward, Bac Giang city (Bac Giang province) still provides cool shade and bears abundant fruit every season.

According to ancient documents preserved in the residential area, the persimmon tree was planted about 300 years ago, within the complex of Huong Pagoda and the shrine of General Le Van Minh, which has been classified as a national historical relic by the Ministry of Culture and Information.

The tree is 20 meters tall, has a trunk diameter of 1.3 meters, and its canopy covers an area of approximately 200 square meters.

The persimmon tree was a place where villagers rested after working in the fields and held recreational activities during festivals. Because it was planted in the central area, at the highest point of the village, during the resistance against French colonialism and American imperialism, the persimmon tree was where the village chief or information officer used a megaphone to announce village affairs or sound the alarm when the enemy approached.

When persimmons ripen, they emit a strong, fragrant aroma. This scent has a calming and relaxing effect, reducing nervous tension.

Specifically, dried persimmon peel, burned to charcoal and ground into a fine powder, is mixed with a carrier oil (sesame oil, coconut oil, almond oil, etc.) and used topically to treat blisters caused by shingles.

Mr. Nguyen Van Phi, residing in Huong residential area, said that although he is 81 years old this year, since he was a child he had heard his ancestors recount that the ancient persimmon tree had lived with the village for hundreds of years.

Despite enduring two fierce wars of resistance against the French and Americans, under the relentless bombing and shelling of the enemy, the historical relics of the communal house and pagoda in Huong residential area remain safe. Previously, loudspeakers were hung on a persimmon tree to serve propaganda and information dissemination. The persimmon tree is a historical witness, a symbol of the vigorous vitality, resilience, and pride of the heroic homeland of Bac Giang.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Toan, head of Huong neighborhood group, with those significant meanings, on August 25, 2021, the Vietnam Ornamental Plants Association issued a decision recognizing the persimmon tree as an "Ancient tree with historical and cultural value".

"Due to the prolonged Covid-19 pandemic, the traditional Huong Pagoda festival, which takes place in January of the Year of the Rabbit 2023, was only announced by the officials and residents of the residential area at that time," Mr. Toan shared.

Currently, Huong residential area has established regulations for managing and protecting trees in conjunction with building a culturally advanced residential area. At the same time, they are widely disseminating information to the people about the importance of preserving ancient trees, mobilizing people to contribute to tree care, and promoting the movement of planting green trees and ornamental plants, thereby contributing to protecting and improving the living environment.
