At Dong Yen parish church, Yen Dai parish, Nghi Phu ward, Vinh city (Nghe An), parishioners made a Christmas tree out of bamboo. In the photo, the tree is set up in front of Dong Yen parish church.
To make this Christmas tree, the parishioners of Dong Yen had to buy bamboo from the mountains. The bamboo was then cleaned, assembled, and tied together with flexible steel wires to match the shape of the tree.
Bamboo is cut into 10cm pieces, with holes punched through the joints. Then, parishioners tie them together into large pieces. In the photo, parishioners of Dong Yen parish are carving and preparing bamboo pieces.
Large pieces of bamboo logs, after being strung together, are tied to a pine tree frame.
This Christmas tree is an important highlight in the system of works to welcome Christmas this year of the parishioners of Dong Yen parish, made from 1,400 bamboo trees. In the photo, the Christmas tree made from bamboo trees has been completed and put into use after nearly 1 month of construction.
The bamboo is left in a round tube, covering the steel pillar of the pine tree. In the photo, the pine tree tower is made, the design is quite elaborate and meticulous.
The Christmas tree is designed with 3 floors, 22m high; the bottom platform has a diameter of 8m. People can walk around the tree tower to observe below and around.
Father Joseph Nguyen Dinh Khan, the parish priest, said that the idea of making a Christmas tree out of bamboo has the meaning of faith and cultural integration. In Vietnamese history and culture, bamboo is a symbol of the indomitable spirit and indomitable will of the Vietnamese people. In the photo is a symbol of peaceful connection.
"Christmas is Emmanuel who is with us, understanding all the wishes of the Vietnamese people and will always be there to support and bless those who receive Him. The pine tree has a path leading up, symbolizing the journey to heaven to enjoy eternal happiness in the future," said Father Giuse Nguyen Dinh Khan.
The path up and down the pine tree is 2m wide and paved with very sturdy bamboo panels.
The process of lighting the Christmas tree requires carefulness and detail, leaving no room for error will lead to possible risks.
Mr. Ho Ngoc Van, Head of the Dong Yen Parish Executive Committee, said that to make this unique pine tree, 30-40 people worked every day for nearly a month.
“The cost of buying decorations for the Christmas tree was about 60 million VND, not including the labor costs. After the tree was completed, it attracted many people in the area to come and see it, and the parishioners were also very happy,” Mr. Van shared.
The campus of Dong Yen parish church is decorated with a "giant" pine tree made of bamboo to serve Christmas 2024 to the people in the area.
For Catholics, every Christmas cannot be without the image of a pine tree. The solidity and radiance of the pine tree is likened to the solidity of a church bell tower.
