According to PhoneArena , in the first quarter of 2024, global smartphone sales increased by 7.8% compared to the same period last year, to 289.4 million units. Apple only sold 50.1 million iPhones during this period, ranking second with 17.3% market share.
Consumers are no longer too interested in iPhone in Q1/2024
Samsung took the top spot with its flagship Galaxy S24 series featuring Galaxy AI features, helping the company ship 60.1 million smartphones. Although this was down 0.7% year-on-year, it still gave Samsung an industry-leading market share of 20.8%. Thanks to a 33.8% increase in sales, Xiaomi came in third with a 14.1% market share after shipping a total of 40.8 million smartphones in the first three months of the year.
The fastest growing smartphone maker in Q1 was Transsion (China), which saw an 84.9% jump in shipments to 28.5 million phones, giving it a 10% global market share and fourth place. Transsion smartphones are sold in countries across Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Latin America. Oppo came in fifth place, shipping 25.2 million smartphones in Q1, giving it an 8.7% market share.
Galaxy AI features that have drawn users to the Galaxy S24 series
IDC representatives said that the smartphone market actually recovered in the first quarter as previously predicted. While Apple took the lead by the end of 2023, Samsung succeeded in reasserting its position as the leading smartphone supplier in the first quarter of 2024.
IDC also predicts that smartphone average selling prices are rising, as consumers wait to buy the high-end models they plan to use for a long time. As a result, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are expected to sell more than the non-Pro models, helping Apple earn more revenue for each iPhone sold. However, discounts of up to $180 on iPhones in China in the first months of the year could impact this average selling price.
