Djokovic loses world number 1 position to Alcaraz ahead of Wimbledon

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên26/06/2023

This is the position that Alcaraz lost after losing to Djokovic in the semi-finals of the French Open not long ago. However, with a 2-0 victory (6/4, 6/4) over Alex de Minaur in the final of the ATP 500 Queen's Club last night (June 25, Vietnam time), Alcaraz surpassed Djokovic by only 80 points to regain the world No. 1 position. Meanwhile, the "living legend" Djokovic has not yet returned to competition after winning the title at the French Open.

Alcaraz has first title on grass

With his first title on grass, the 20-year-old will be confident going into Wimbledon next week. Alcaraz said: "I'm very confident going into Wimbledon. I finished the week in good form, so right now I feel like one of the favourites to win Wimbledon, but I have to gain more experience on grass."

Returning to the world No. 1 spot would make Alcaraz the No. 1 seed at the only Grand Slam tournament on grass. However, Djokovic is still the top candidate at Wimbledon, where he has won 7 times and is only behind the record of 8 titles of "Express Train" Roger Federer (Switzerland).

"Novak is the top candidate for Wimbledon, but I will try to play at this level to have a chance to beat him or reach the final. I saw a statistic that Novak has won more matches at Wimbledon than the other top 20 players (combined)," the Spanish world number one expressed his determination to stop Djokovic in his quest for a 24th Grand Slam title and thereby equal Federer's Wimbledon record.

Djokovic is the current Wimbledon champion.

Currently, Djokovic still has a record of 28 unbeaten matches at Wimbledon since 2018 with 4 consecutive championships. Although he is 36 years old, but with what he has shown at the French Open, Djokovic still shows that he is always the biggest "barrier" for young players wanting to win the tournament he participates in.
