On October 12, the Department of Health of Quang Binh province said it had received the petition and was investigating the cause of death of a pregnant woman waiting to give birth at Bo Trach District General Hospital.
Previously, at 8:00 p.m. on October 9, Ms. Phan Thi Dau (67 years old, residing in Hung Trach commune, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province) brought her daughter Nguyen Thi H. (35 years old) to the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, Bo Trach District General Hospital to wait for delivery. At the time of admission, the health condition of the pregnant woman H. was examined and concluded to be normal.
At 5:45 a.m. on October 10, the hospital announced that the pregnant woman was in critical condition and needed to be transferred to a higher level for emergency care.
An hour later, the pregnant woman was taken to the Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi for emergency treatment. However, the doctors there informed the family that the fetus was 99% dead, the pregnant woman had a poor prognosis, and a low survival rate. After that, the doctors performed emergency surgery and removed the fetus, but the fetus died, and the pregnant woman Nguyen Thi H. also did not survive.
After this incident, the family of the pregnant woman Nguyen Thi H. filed a complaint against Bo Trach District General Hospital, accusing the hospital of being irresponsible, leading to the death of mother and child while waiting to give birth.
A representative of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Bo Trach District General Hospital explained that according to the on-call records, at around 8:00 p.m. on October 9, after receiving the pregnant woman Nguyen Thi H., the unit assigned a doctor in the department to be on duty and monitor her that night. According to the medical records, upon admission, the pregnant woman H. was in normal health, had normal pulse and temperature, and still had amniotic fluid.
The process of labor was followed according to the Ministry of Health's protocol. However, at 3:00 a.m. on October 10, the pregnant woman H. showed signs of fatigue, pale mucous membranes, and low blood pressure. From there, the hospital determined that the pregnant woman needed to be transferred to a higher level.
Dr. Duong Thanh Binh, Director of the Quang Binh Department of Health, said that the department has directed the Health Inspectorate to investigate and requested the Bo Trach District General Hospital to report in writing. The medical records are being sealed.
