Fresh coconut water is becoming more and more popular on the market, so it is not difficult to find this drink. On hot summer days, a glass of fresh coconut water not only helps cool the body but also quickly replenishes water and minerals.

According to the post on Long Chau Pharmacy's website, coconut water is extracted from fresh coconuts, with a nutritional composition table including:

  • Water (about 95 - 97%) - is the main component of coconut water.
  • Sugar (about 1.4%): Coconut water contains natural sugars such as fructose, glucose and sucrose.
  • Minerals (about 0.5%): Coconut water contains minerals such as potassium, magnesium, sodium, calcium.
  • Vitamins (about 0.2%): Coconut water contains several vitamins such as vitamin C, vitamin B and vitamin E.
  • Fiber (about 0.2%): Coconut water contains some fibers such as lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose.
  • Protein and fat (about 0.5%): Coconut water contains some protein and fat such as lauric, capric and caprylic acids.

With the nutritional composition table above, coconut water has many health benefits, but drinking coconut water every day is not good.

What happens if you drink coconut water every day?

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Son - University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Branch 3 shared on VnExpress newspaper, coconut is an easy-to-find fruit and relatively cheap, with a cool, sweet flavor, so it is popular with many people.

However, drinking coconut water every day will have some side effects that affect health.

Full stomach

If you drink coconut water continuously at the same time or drink too much coconut water in a day, it can easily cause bloating and fullness. At this time, the stomach accumulates a lot of water, causing the stomach to stretch and become uncomfortable.

Lower blood pressure

Coconut water has a rich potassium content, so drinking too much or drinking continuously every day can easily lead to excess potassium, lowering blood pressure with symptoms of dizziness, lightheadedness or even fainting.

Electrolyte imbalance

Electrolyte imbalance or electrolyte disturbance occurs when the concentration of potassium and sodium in the blood increases/decreases beyond the safe level. Continuously drinking coconut water can easily change these two indicators in the blood, causing slow blood circulation and unstable heart rate.

Risk of hyperglycemia

About 100ml of coconut water contains about 5g of carbohydrates, so people with diabetes need to control the amount of coconut water they drink daily to prevent the risk of increased blood sugar and serious complications.

Increased pressure on the kidneys

Drinking a lot of coconut water causes the number of times you urinate to increase with greater frequency because the kidneys have to "try" to work hard to excrete, the kidney parenchyma cells will temporarily swell. If this phenomenon persists, kidney function may decline.

With the above explanations, it can be seen that coconut water is good, bringing many health benefits if used in the right amount, you should not drink coconut water every day. For the best health, you should only drink 2 - 3 coconuts per week, which is about 500ml is enough.

Notes when drinking coconut water

  • Do not drink sour, rancid coconut water.
  • Coconut water is not good for people with low blood pressure because it will lower blood pressure too much.
  • If you are pregnant, you should absolutely not drink coconut water in the first months of pregnancy. From the third month onwards, when the fetus has gradually stabilized, you should supplement with coconut water.
