On May 11, speaking at the International Nurses Day Celebration (May 12), Professor, Dr. Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health, said that in 2023, the World Nursing Council issued a message of action: "We Nurses - Our Future."

Responding to the above message of the World Council of Nurses, the Ministry of Health organized the International Nurses Day Celebration to recognize and honor the contributions of nurses and midwives, and at the same time demonstrate the strategy and orientation of the Vietnamese health sector in gradually improving the quality of patient care, moving towards regional and international nursing integration, the Deputy Minister of Health stated.

The Deputy Minister of Health highly appreciated and commended the efforts and important and effective contributions of the nursing team in policy making, care management organization, training, care practice and scientific research.

The quality of patient care has changed significantly through innovation in care assignment models, patient care organization, and standardization of nursing techniques.

Services provided by nurses and midwives increasingly contribute significantly to improving the quality of health care for people and enhancing the professional status and image of nurses and midwives.

In particular, in the work of preventing and fighting the COVID-19 epidemic, nurses and midwives have contributed very effectively along with doctors and other medical staff to gradually push back the epidemic.

The Deputy Minister of Health emphasized that nursing is currently facing many difficulties and challenges. Many places still believe that “Nursing is a service profession, nurses are just people who follow doctors’ orders.” Nursing human resources are lacking in quantity and have lower professional capacity than many countries in the region.

Patient care at medical facilities still depends heavily on the patient's family. Nursing practice is not consistent with the training degree. Nursing training does not meet practical and integration requirements. Nursing leadership and management systems are not appropriate...

“In the coming time, the health sector will focus on solutions to fundamentally and comprehensively innovate nursing work. The sector will focus on raising awareness of the importance of nursing work, developing nursing human resources, promoting the development of technology and equipment to improve the quality of comprehensive patient care in medical examination and treatment facilities to meet the requirements of practical care and nursing integration in the ASEAN region,” said Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan.

The Deputy Minister of Health requested that leaders at all levels of the health sector continue to pay attention, invest, recognize and honor the role of nurses for a bright future of the nursing profession, as well as the health sector, to achieve the goals of sustainable development, universal health insurance and health for all.

Dr. Angela Pratt, World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Vietnam, acknowledged the particularly important role of nurses and midwives, especially in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, and affirmed the role of nursing staff in patient care.

“As we have seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses and midwives are the backbone of the health workforce, the beating heart of the health system. Nurses have a particularly important role in the primary health care system - our future," emphasized the World Health Organization Representative in Viet Nam.

To highlight the importance of the role of nurses and midwives, WHO published the “State of the World Nursing Report” in 2020, said Dr. Angela Pratt.

In 2021, WHO continues to publish the "State of the World Midwifery Report," providing evidence on the current situation of nursing and midwifery, a priority area to focus on.

Recently, WHO published the "Global Strategic Directions for Nursing and Midwifery" for the period 2021-2025, which identifies four strategic directions to strengthen the nursing and midwifery workforce.

The WHO Representative in Vietnam highly appreciated the efforts of the Vietnamese health sector to improve nursing training, expertise and working environment; affirmed that WHO is committed to providing maximum support for these efforts.

Dr. Tran Quang Huy, Vice President of the Vietnam Nursing Association, shared that in reality, nurses play an indispensable role in caring for and restoring the health of patients. They are the first people to approach patients when they come to the hospital, responsible for caring for, monitoring, and coordinating with colleagues and other medical staff to carry out comprehensive care and treatment interventions with the best quality for patients throughout the treatment process.

“The nurse is also the last medical staff to come into contact with the patient before they are discharged from the hospital; providing guidance, health consultation, and necessary instructions after the patient is discharged from the hospital as well as completing administrative procedures upon discharge.”

The nursing workforce makes important contributions to medical research and development, introducing or applying new treatment methods, improving care processes, and enhancing the quality of medical care. Therefore, the nursing profession plays a very important role not only in the present but also in the future of the health system./.
