- Being a very familiar face on stage and television for many years, but why did Tu Oanh have to wait more than 30 years to have her first leading role in the movie "Rain on the Butterfly Wings" and immediately go to the Venice and Busan Film Festivals?
This is my first leading role because before that I only played supporting roles. In my second year at the University of Theatre and Cinema, I acted in the film Fairy Tale for 17-year-olds . In my fourth year, I acted in Retired General . The year I graduated, I appeared in Life's Game . At that time, movies were not as popular as they are now and I only played supporting roles so I did not leave any great impression.
Only then did someone trust me and see that I was suitable for her character, that was director Duong Dieu Linh. As actors, we have to depend on the director and cannot actively seek out roles. When assigned a role, we just try to do our best according to the director's wishes or discuss to agree on how to express the role.

- It seems like you are the type of actress who doesn't refuse any type of role, even very small supporting roles, even oshin roles that make you look bad. Are you picky about roles?
I never think of being picky about roles because the director is the one who actively looks for actors for his work. Which actor is suitable for which role is the director's right and I don't think I have the right to ask my co-star to be suitable for me.
I also never refuse even a very small role. I always tell my friends: One or two sentences is fine, as long as you need me, I am willing to do it and will make that character the best. I do not choose long or short roles, ugly or beautiful roles.

For example, Mrs. Bich in The Taste of Love initially defended and favored her biological child and was annoyed and annoyed with her adopted child. That personality trait made the character become individualistic and hated by the audience. But for me, when playing a supporting role, I have to have the responsibility of making the main character stand out, making the main character's path more thorny and more valuable when reaching the finish line.
That's the role of a supporting role and when I get a role like that, I usually discuss with the director, find out the reason why the character becomes so mean. As long as I find a legitimate reason, I will be able to portray it.
At that time, The Taste of Love was the drama that marked many years since I returned to television. After a long time, I was an ex-lover and did not have much contact with social networks. My Facebook was also just for my close friends. So, when the drama was filmed a long time ago, I just learned about the so-called waiting message. At that time, I was so shocked that I had a fever.
I say I don't care about those comments, but I'm still deeply affected. Many times when I read the messages, my chest hurts because the audience is confused and not only talks about the character but also curses the actor. It hurts and sad! For me, there are no small roles or few roles, as long as I find a way to express it, I will try my best.

Mango was very simple in the beginning of the script and later the director wanted to develop it further. Actors my age were all excited to be cast in the role and I always liked to explore my character, experimenting to create the makeup, background and personality for the role. When I decided on the character, I felt worried after a few days of acting because I was afraid that Mango would be too over the top. But in the end, I wanted the character to be a bit over the top and make the audience believe that such an over the top person really existed.
As an older person with a lot of experience, I have always observed life. I keep in mind the images I see, about the way many different people express themselves. I often pay attention to arguments on the street, in the market... and see the innocence of people in a state of anger in such situations to understand what kind of people they are in life.
When sharing with young people and those who love acting, I always say that the first thing to have many roles with many different personalities is to actively observe the life around to bring the character to reality. Therefore, with Xoai, all the viral sentences on social networks or cut clips are my spontaneous dialogue and not in the script.
Sons under pressure when both parents are in the profession
- Your son, actor Bui Thac Phong, recently co-starred in the movie "Rain on the Butterfly Wings" with you and will soon appear in "Space of Time". I wonder if you gave him much acting instruction at home and if Phong listened to his mother?
For any child working in a field where either the father or mother is in it, there is pressure, but for Phong having both, the pressure is even greater, he needs to really try to follow the career. Therefore, we are very objective, let him choose for himself and if he needs to discuss anything, we will give him some opinions, but the parents cannot give him any guidance.

- Not only is it your first time playing the lead role in a movie, 2024 also marks your first time playing Tao Quan and modeling at a fashion week. Tu Oanh always seems to surprise the audience?
I was even more surprised by that (laughs). Actually, the designer took a risk by inviting me to show that collection. As for me, it's always fun to do something new, to do things I never thought I would be in that position.
