A team of researchers at the University of Washington (UW) has created an app called FeverPhone that turns a smartphone into a thermometer without requiring any new hardware.
Current clinical thermometers use small sensors called thermistors to estimate body temperature.
Smartphones also contain thermistors, and they’re primarily used to monitor battery temperature. But according to UW researchers, these sensors could also track heat transfer between people and phones.
When researchers tested FeverPhone on 37 patients in the emergency department, the app estimated core body temperature with comparable accuracy to some current thermometers (pictured).
Overall, FeverPhone estimated the average patient's body temperature with an average error of about 0.41oF (0.23oC), which is within the clinically acceptable range of 0.5oC, according to UW News.
