Naming 5 agricultural, forestry and fishery products with billion-dollar export value in the first quarter of 2024 Seafood exports to China: Towards negotiating the Protocol

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) announced statistics that the top five exported products in August were still white-leg shrimp, pangasius, tuna, tiger prawn and squid. Squid exports continued to decline by more than 9% in August, while exports of other products increased positively: white-leg shrimp increased by 19%, pangasius increased by 12%, and tiger prawn increased by 6%. Declining exploitation and regulations against IUU fishing have left squid processing enterprises without raw materials to process for export.

In the first 8 months of the year, whiteleg shrimp brought in the largest export revenue, with 1.76 billion USD, up 8% over the same period in 2023. Whiteleg shrimp exports to the EU grew the strongest among the top major consumption markets, up nearly 18%. Of which, the 3 largest markets in the bloc, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, all recorded double-digit growth, up 12%, 24% and 23% respectively over the same period last year. In addition, many other markets also increased their imports of whiteleg shrimp from Vietnam. For example, exports to Denmark increased by 34%, to Spain by 64%, to Sweden by 24%, to Ireland by 63%, to Romania by 59%...

The US is the largest consumer market for Vietnamese whiteleg shrimp. However, whiteleg shrimp exports to the US in the first eight months of the year increased by only nearly 7%. Exports to the Japanese market increased by a modest 2.4%. Meanwhile, exports to China were only equivalent to the same period last year.

Tiger shrimp was also in the top 5 seafood exports in the first 8 months of this year, but the export value decreased by 6% compared to the same period last year, reaching 295 million USD. Vietnamese tiger shrimp still maintains a good position in Japan and the EU, so despite the generally unfavorable market situation, tiger shrimp exports to these two markets still increased by 7% and 10% compared to the same period last year.

With nearly 1.3 billion USD, pangasius brought in the second largest export revenue in the first 8 months of this year, 9% higher than the same period last year. The most expected destination in 2024 is still the US market with a turnover of 226 million USD, up 23% over the same period last year.

Meanwhile, pangasius exports to China and the EU both decreased slightly. As the largest importer of pangasius from Vietnam, but due to low import prices (fluctuating from only 1.9 - 2 USD/kg), exports to this market could not improve. The difficult economic situation in China made importers of this country more cautious. In contrast, pangasius exports to South American markets such as Brazil and Colombia made a very good breakthrough, increasing by 28% and 44% respectively, while to Mexico also increased by 18%.

Tuna exports in the first 8 months of the year reached 648 million USD, up 48%. The main strengths of tuna exports are canned fish, up 19%, and exports of canned raw tuna such as yellowfin tuna loins and skipjack tuna. The raw materials for tuna export production in the first half of the year mainly come from year-end reserves and the first months of the year.

Not only affected by raw material issues, Vietnam's squid exports are also affected by reduced consumption in the context of a slow global economic recovery. By the end of August, squid exports decreased by 6.5% to 220 million USD. Of which, only the Chinese market increased its imports of Vietnamese squid by 22%, while exports to other major markets all decreased. Meanwhile, octopus exports increased slightly by 2.5% to 185 million USD.

With a growth of 14.5%, seafood exports in August brought a positive signal to the seafood industry community, with the belief that in 2024, exports will achieve better results than in 2023. However, there are still major challenges affecting the seafood export industry, such as the IUU yellow card for the EU market, anti-subsidy tax on shrimp for the US market...
