Translator, "French speaking shipper" Huynh Huu Phuoc

Also on the afternoon of December 16, answering a reporter from Thanh Nien Newspaper, translator Nguyen Le Chi, Vice President of the Translation Literature Council at the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association, said that the criteria for judging the Translation Literature Award is that first of all, the work must have true literary quality. "The translated work must convey the true spirit of the original work, with a smooth writing style and expressive sentences. Young translators are especially encouraged to build a new generation of translators. With the above criteria, translator JB (Huynh Huu Phuoc) has met all of them. Your translation style is quite smooth, while this work can be considered difficult to translate," said Ms. Nguyen Le Chi.

The Vice President of the Translation Literature Council at the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association said that the novel Daughter is an interesting and unique work about a woman's life from birth, as a child, to the time when she gradually grows up, matures, falls in love, gets married, gives birth, watches her children grow up and repeats the life that her mother, grandmother... have experienced.

The work Daughter , French name Fille , novel by Camilie Laurens, Vietnamese Women Publishing House, won the 2023 Translation Literature Award of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association.

Author Camille Laurens uses three-person narrative to describe and emphasize the thoughts, feelings and transformation from a girl to a woman. She vividly describes the childhood moments that influence later adulthood, and analyzes the female experience in a sexist society in a subtle and clear way. This helps to express the experience of women in the 20th and 21st centuries in a unique and authentic way.

"Although this is his first translation, young translator JB (Huynh Huu Phuoc) has really won over readers with this rather difficult to translate narrative genre. It is worth mentioning that JB is a male translator, very young in age, but his first translation is about the life cycle of women, which is truly a big challenge. Not to mention that it is a work by female author Camille Laurens - who is considered one of the "champions" of contemporary French literature with many literary works over the past two decades", Ms. Nguyen Le Chi commented.

Phuoc in a rented room full of books in November 2022

When Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter asked translator Huynh Huu Phuoc, the "French-speaking shipper" on the book street who has been mentioned a lot in the media recently, about his difficult circumstances and his determination to overcome his fate. So when judging the awards, does the award committee consider this factor, or does it only evaluate based on the quality of the work?

Translator Nguyen Le Chi affirmed: "The judging panel is based on the work. First, the translated work conveys the spirit of the original work. Second, the translation style is smooth and easy to read. Third, this is a young translator who dares to try translating a difficult book by a veteran in the writing industry for the first time. All three of these factors, along with the translator's perseverance, create the success of the translated work. Normally, for those who are new to translation, they will try their hand at short stories, essays, or articles... instead of immediately translating a famous literary work. Because they will be overwhelmed and scared, but this translator is not like that. That shows the courage, confidence, and perseverance that a professional translator needs. If JB perseveres in following the path of translation, I believe that he will become a professional literary translator."

"If your level and ability are limited and the translated work is not of good quality, the Translation Literature Council will certainly not award the prize. However, this success is only the first step on the academic path. You need to persevere and continuously nurture your passion to reap more success," Ms. Nguyen Le Chi added.
