He made many contributions to the field of scientific research, spreading agricultural knowledge and supporting the solution of food security issues for countries in the region. He passed away on the morning of August 19, at the age of 84.
A life of concern and dedication to agriculture
Prof. Dr. People's Teacher Vo Tong Xuan was born in 1940 in Chau Doc - An Giang. He is a leading agricultural scientist in Vietnam with many contributions to scientific research, famous for his initiatives to invent and popularize disease-resistant rice varieties, helping to increase productivity and ensure global food security.
The revolution in agriculture was greatly promoted by the efforts of Professor, Doctor, People's Teacher, and Labor Hero Vo Tong Xuan in expanding access to quality rice seeds and increasing rice production at lower costs without using toxic chemicals.
With a strategic vision and a heart always towards farmers, he not only laid the foundation for advanced farming methods to increase productivity, but also aimed at protecting the environment, maintaining biodiversity and supporting workers' livelihoods.
Known as the “father” of many young rice varieties, he has been concerned about the rice grains and rice plants of his country, contributing to making Vietnam a world-famous rice exporting country. Vietnam’s leading scientist in the field of agriculture is also the author of many valuable research works, textbooks, books, and reference materials serving domestic and international agricultural production on responding to climate change, building key agricultural areas, large-scale fields, building organic agriculture; accessing the world’s advanced science and technology in the most effective and appropriate way.
He was a National Assembly delegate for the 7th, 8th, and 9th terms; as well as Vice Principal of Can Tho University, Principal of An Giang University... and was awarded the title of Labor Hero and People's Teacher by the State.
As an educator, he has imparted knowledge and skills to generations of students, researchers and farmers. His solutions have helped Vietnamese farmers change their mindset, move from traditional farming to applying science and technology, increase income and improve their lives. Thereby, raising awareness and promoting actions to respond to global challenges such as climate change and food security crisis.
Not only focusing on research and teaching, Prof. Dr. Vo Tong Xuan also plays an important role in building national agricultural policies. He has stimulated and promoted cooperation between educational institutions, enterprises, government agencies and international organizations, creating an effective ecosystem to support the comprehensive development of Vietnam's agricultural sector as a member of IFDC, IRRI, and the International Potato Institute.
The research works of Professor, Doctor, People's Teacher, and Labor Hero Vo Tong Xuan also bring many benefits to farmers in poor countries such as Africa and build an agriculture suitable to the situation and conditions of each country.

Since 2010, Prof. Dr. People's Teacher Vo Tong Xuan has joined Thanh Thanh Cong - Bien Hoa Joint Stock Company (TTC AgriS, Hose: SBT) as a Senior Agricultural Advisor and an important member of the company's Board of Directors.
